Default RE: 30-06 and grizzly

DM,
First of all you have to remember that they were hunting Moose on this trip, not Grizz, and were tracking a wounded Moose! They didn't know that a Grizz was even close by.
I would have to disagree with you on the shot placement of that Charging Grizz. In the first place, I never mentioned what kind of bullet they were using in the 375, and in the second place, I think a forehead shot on a Grizz that is charging you from less than 20 feet is an excellent shot! There is no way that you could have broken BOTH of that bears shoulders from that angle, no matter what gun you were using. And I also disagree that an 06 or any rifle for that matter, would have penetrated that bears skull, no matter what bullet you had in it, at that high angle. It would have glanced off as well, but would have delivered much less energy( and yes, energy is everything if you can't get penetration ) and may have gotten them both killed. Good shooting skills go by the way side when you are placed in this situatuion. At 20 feet they probably had 2 seconds or less to either kill or turn the bear or be killed. There is NO guarantee that you are going to get a perfect shot at a charging bear.As far as not having experience with bear hunting to back up what I am posting, I am not talking about my experience, I am talking about a buddy of mine who was there and was a part of this attack. As I have stated, and you must not have read, Shooting and killing an unsuspecting bear is one thing, I agree that an 06 has plenty of power to do this, but a 2 second or less time to react on a charging Grizz is something TOTALLY different! Alot of people may have never even gotten a shot off due to fear and shock! And as for YOUR experience, I seriously doubt that in all your years of hunting bear that you have EVER been in this situation!
