Default RE: Feeder Question

Hey Gut,

Here in Illinois we are not allowed to use feeders to attract deer. We can use them to simply feed the deer (not during hunting season or within "xyz" yards of where you are hunting).

I have feed deer in the past with a trough type feeder, however I no longer use this feeder beacuse of CWD (http://dnr.state.il.us/pubaffairs/2002/CWD.htm).

It seems that CWD is transmitted through the mucous membranes. When deer touch noses, or touch something that another has touched with it's nose etc. the disease is transmitted.

We have decided NOT to use our feeder until this threat to our whitetail population has passed (if ever).

Just my .02

BTW - When we did feed, we could burn through over 160lbs of feed in a week easy. It's not just deer that are eating your corn; coons, tree rats, and the like will all help in consuming the feed.
