ORIGINAL: Mid-Vermont
Hey Rick james (Superfreak?)
I live in Rutland, VT which is in the central part of the state. I hunt mostly in Rutland County but also hunt in Addison County as well. I've had pretty good luck over the past 10 or so years. This past season I did not tag a buck in Vermont (2nd time in last 12 years). The hunting in this state has deteriorated in the last 2-3 years. It's a combination of factors; back to back harsh winters, a coyote problem the state does not know how to deal with, an exploding turkey population and decreased winter habitat to name a few.
We should get together sometime, I am in Rutland almost every weekend and I grew up in Clarendon and Shrewsbury. I live in Clifton Park, NY during the week but return to Rutland area for all of my hunting/fishing almost every weekend, most of my family lives in Chittendon, Rutland, and Middlebury now. This last year was my first back in the area after spending 8 years in central, PA......what a difference in deer hunting up here compared to PA. Those PA boys wouldn't complain so much about AR if they had to hunt mid and southern VT. As you said, the deer hunting seems to be mediocre at best however I still managed to fill 2 tags this year between bow season and rifle and saw quite a few deer and 5 bucks. The turkey hunting however is incredible, I tagged 2 birds in 3 days of hunting last spring one of which weighed in at 18lbs in the third week with a 10 1/2" beard.
I have a few good spots that you probably already know of, but I know them like the back of my hand, I would be glad to share if you would be willing to do the same. Do you do any yote hunting? I will be going out in the next few weeks calling for foxes and yotes, your more than welcome to come if you wish. I don't really know anyone in the area anymore that is as passionate about hunting as I am, and would love to meet a few others. Mayben we could meet up for a beer sometime?
