Sika rut hunting from late march to may, we do have Elk here thanks to POTUS 26 under management controlled hunting blocks and they use a ballot system thats in South Island. It's a shame the Moose didn't get a chance to breed they were sadly "killed off" I liked the US Big horn sheep they would thrive over here for sure.
A few points to add NZ FISH & GAME manage Waterfowl, upland game birds & also Rainbow and brown trout fishing, & they issue both licenses, NZ Regions varies on bird bag numbers but trout fish are set daily catch nationwide. I live & work in the farming community & have hunting access to feral turkeys & Canadian geese on farming stations. You can ask farmers if you're be able to hunt thier lands, most are good for access if there are problem geese raiding crops & turkeys if there are too many. Farms either bordering on national parks or forestry blocks have red deer, pigs & goats so the farming community has potential for Hunting & worth looking into.
