I have done both succesfully, I prefer the ground myself because you can rapidly change spots if the wind shifts and the additional thrill of being eye level with the deer. One of my daughters and I were leaning up against a huge tree and had a doe within 20 feet of us feeding for several minutes before she just meandered away.
