You're nitpicking at a word.
From Merriam Webster: a mark to shoot at, a goal to be achieved.
As is usual, there is more than one meaning of the word.
Many people have target bucks that they go after. Target weights that they work towards. Target amounts for their savings account, etc.
i would certainly Target that deer if it was in my woods. And you've probably targeted deer as well. Even if you call it something different.
