in my defense here , the day started out with a slushy rain/snow mix with temps about 35 f, but as the temp dropped it did not take long for that to change to basically cold ice, then snow
temperature swings in the mountains seem to be more frequent and at times more rapid than many people expect.
one reason I generally pack a poncho and spare down vest in a pack.
being from montana you might not believe this, but in mid florida ,winter around here, tends to last 48-72 hours with temps rarely dipping into the very high 30F range.
in the last 70 years or so, in mid fla. its snowed twice that I remember, both times the snow melts as it hits the ground.
Yeah I foolishly purchased a camo rain coat , that looked too be rubberized fabric at a close out sale at a local sporting goods store, for a very low price..
Sure Ive occasionally made mistakes, but I seldom repeat mistakes. and learning from those mistakes is part of gaining skills
