Coming from more of a muzzleloading back ground i really prefer to keep actual bullet caliber as close as possible to bore caliber. Thicker sabots are problematic. Years ago Remington offered a slug using their 50cal 385gr bonded CLHP bullet at 1900 fps. I never shot that slug but i did shoot than bullet in a modern inline 54cal at over 1800fps. That bullet was plain nasty.
