First Deer and only Deer I've ever shot with a bow. They'd closed the county to firearms because of a really high fire danger. Bow hunting Deer way back then was in it's infancy, very few bow hunters around. I used an aluminum re-curve bow I'd made from a kit. I practiced hunting crows.
It was mostly luck , I'd followed some fresh scuff marks up a hill away from a trickle of water in a canyon, into some fairly thick Chaparral and caught a young Buck (California Mule, 18 months old) sleeping. I missed my first shot low and the dummy just laid there looking at the arrow, didn't miss the second shot. I had some trouble tracking him in the brush but eventually found him. I remember it was around 10-11 in the morning when I found him, southern California hot and almost unbearable in that brush. Even hotter getting that Deer out of there, impossible to stand up straight in the brush. I Dragged that Deer maybe a quarter of a mile, mostly on my hands and knees, it seemed a lot farther.
