I helped track one that went about 3/4 mile. I stumbled on the blood trail - and soon after the neighbor hunter came along and said he had hit one - so I helped track. It was bleeding heavy, but dark. Back then it seemed like following was the right thing to do, but we jumped it 2 times and he shot it in its bed the 3rd time we saw it. It had been liver shot - maybe slightly in one lung too.

Had he waited to follow - and I hadn' t have stumbled on the trail - the deer would have died in its 1st bed (near where I was hunting) - about 2 hours and 250 yds from point of impact. All in all - we were probably luck that he was able to harvest the buck considering the distance it went.
