Fact: The elk won't realize ANY difference between the two guns.
Opinion: 300 = 180 gr bullets 338 = 225 bullets
Another opinion, but a solid one: Buy a SIMS recoil pad for either gun. It makes a world of difference in flinching for me and most people I have talked to.
