Yes I will always try to face the decoys in my direction. Not much you can do if the turkeys show up behind you and hang up, but being infront of you, I feel that if the gobbler sees the decoys and sees that they can see him, he will hang up wait for the hen(s) to come his way, "I can see them, they can see me" type thinking. Now just like any wild animal, they are unpredicatable and could still hang up with your decoys facing away from him. Just the chance you take. As for the cutting and the tom leaving to go back into the woods, probably not the calling that needed to be done. Its hard to say why he took off, but I personally wont do any cutting unless I still cant see the bird and feel he has hung up. Also, when these birds cross the field, do they always go to the same spot when they cross it? If so, you may want to set up closer to that spot and in the woods about 30-35 yds with your decoys in the woods too. If there is no rhyme or reason to where they go once they get into the field, you're going to have to play the odds and go where you think they may go and set up close to there. Good luck.
