That study was done about 5-6 years ago...If I remember correctly the SC Wildlife folks did it...
They did find that many out of state hunters used a caliber larger than needed and a bullet harder than needed and the deer went further with these bullets...

For the past 25 years or so we kill 40-50 deer a year on our farms...If a guy is a decent shot, we find the deer if not, we might or might not...The weapon used has little to do with recovery rate...
