Soybeans are not drought tolerant, and not real heat tolerant, either. They don't grow well in most parts of Texas.

Peas (black-eyed, purple hull, iron and clay, and the like) are not a bad option for a warm-season plot. Beardless winter wheat is hard to beat for a cool-season plot.
