Default RE: buckshot for coyotes?

im curious on the difference in effective range between #4buck and dead coyote. is it worth the price? i have only taken two yotes with my shotgun. 20 and 50 steps. the 50 step shot first one rolled him he got back up and i fired 2 fast and final shots. the yote had a broken front and back leg with several in the vitals but that was 3 shots. i know this isnt a effective way to check a pattern, but i took my dead coyote choke and a 2 3/4"winchester #4 buck shell and shot a pumkin (prolly 14inch diameter)at 60 yards (had my rangefinder) had 9 pellets hitting the target. i think that would have killed one?i only shoot 2 3/4 and 3inch dont have a 3 1/2inch gun yet. does a 3 1/2 pattern as well?
