RE: Buck:Doe Ratio....How bad can it be?
I am curious about this topic as well, mainly as to what time of the year published buck to doe ratios are valid. Through the fall (in many areas of the country) the ratios become more and more out of wack. I spend a lot of time out in the late season, on thousands of acres. Disregarding fawns (due to unknown sex) 'apparent' doe to buck ratios might be as high as 8:1 around here. Of course, if 1 in 3 total deer(likely) are also fawns of a 50/50 sex split then the 'real' ratio is less. Going into the fall and based on personal observation I think our local ratio is around 2:1.
I totally agree though - people who say they have 20:1 or some such thing are likely pushing it. Thats only 5 bucks for every 100 does to think of it in bigger terms.
