Is the 243 good for hog hunting?
That's what I bought mine for. The .243 makes a real nice dual purpose rifle. It will work for deer sized game, medium sized game and varmints depending on what loads you use. And they make all kinds. There are probably better guns for each purpose but the .243 really shines on deer sized game down to large varmints like woodchucks. If you were going to go for a varmint only gun a .223 or a 22-250 might be a better choice but the .243 with a 55-80 grn bullet is pretty flat and powerful for varmint/predator hunting.

I would also shy away from the cheap remington. I have never owned one but I did look at a few and wasn't that impressed for the money. You would be better off with a used gun of better quality. Or a Stevens or Mossberg, they are built pretty well and you can get them for $300- $400. The Howa are pretty nice as well if you want to up the price a hundred or so. I have never heard a bad review of any of those three.

Here is a pic of my savage .243 with a 16X Mueller scope.
