i got 1 more year left in Park and Resource Management.
im already trained in CPR, basic search and rescue and some wildland firefighting. next year i will be taking EMT training and seasonal federal law enforcement training.
when im out, i can go 1000000 directions...from NPS, USFWS, BLM, state agencies, work as a park ranger, interpreter, manager, wildland fire fighter, etc etc etc...and with my law enforcement training, i can do anything once i make the next step and get fully trained in federal law enforcement...my advisor has former students working border patrol and working for the FBI etc right now that graduated from the program and major im in.
Memorial day i will be driving to Cape Cod National Seashore to work for the NPS as a dispatcher. how awesome is that? 21yo still in college working as a dispatcher for the NPS on the beach for a summer?? come on...you cant get none better than that. im not much of a beach guy...but come on...im a 21yo guy...living on a beach for the summer....getting paid...getting to live out of state and see new places...getting a pretty awesome job to put on the resume...oh ya...and making money
the times have changed...not all of the jobs your thinking of have crappy pay. i know i will be making 35-40k a year my first year out as a park ranger in a national park. my advisor has former students making 85k a year as rangers after only 10 years or so. that aint bad money for any line of work.
yep, it aint all i can crack it up to be. getting a good job as a ranger in the NPS isnt going to be easy. i may be working a couple "seasons" till i find a permanant position. but, my school is very highly rated in the program. we have a job fair every winter where 5-10 national parks and a couple state and army corp of engineers come to our school to interview us to hire us because they want us. thats why i dont worry one bit. my advisor been at this a while...he got a pile of connections and did some time in the park service himself. knows many people in many places and knows what they want. thats why we get the fire, search and rescue, emt, cpr trainings etc...ontop of LE training and a 4 year degree..we are very marketable and everywhere that our students go seem to want more of us. we got students in all the big parks.
but im not limited to the park service either.
do the research....find the school....persue YOUR dream.
yep, im never likely to be rich or loaded. but, i'll be doin well....and i will be happy doing what i do. money cant buy happiness...ever. everyone in my life i know that has piles of money isnt happy and is really never happy. that aint me. i much rather be happy.
i got lucky and stumbled into this program by pure luck. i went to the school because they had a "pre-engineering" program...i found out in a semester that it wasnt for me and stumbled into my current major
