check the used market... you can find some really nice 2yr old rigs for a reasonable price and they are still up to date technology, should be able to find a nice used rig for about 3-400ish fully accessorized... I'd imagine that unless he's some kind of jock that a 50lb bow is as much as he'll need, FOR NOW... diamond edge can be had for 299 new, still need to get arrows and a release, but a nice bow and reasonable price... only goes to 28" draw so if he's got a wingspan like a pteradactyl you may want to look a bit further up the food chain... but likely you're going to want to get into something that can be upgraded from there (the edge maxes out at 50lb)... if he can pull back a 50lb bow comfortably, get him a 60lb rig and have the draw weight dialed down to 50ish you've got a lot of good options available, do your homework, set your budget (plan on spending about an extra 100-150 over your budget) and have fun...
