RE: getting a deer
One of the keys to hunting is location, location, location. As mentioned the way you can determine this is scouting, scouting and more scouting. Once you have located several areas that either hold deer or are routes for deer, than you can start planning. I always find location that provide me wind direction favor in any possible wind situation, meaning don't put one stand or blind up and hope to hunt it with success. While it maybe true during your particular hunting season a prodominant wind may be evident, I have never relied solely on this. I often have several locations that I will sit and hunt in a given area, where it will be determined by wind, food, time of day or year and pressure (hunting). Once you have done this work you can then look for ambush or concealment areas, so stand or blind locations that will afford you good game movement, viewing, reasonable shooting lanes & distance and maximize your concealment (sitting on a top of hill may give you the first three but will not afford you concealment for movement, etc.) Following that experience and different techinque's may up your success rate or ability to draw animals in to your area(ie: rattling, scents, baiting, decoys, etc). My last tip is when looking or scouting for possible location to hunt from, think like a deer. By this I mean look for spots deer feel comfortable travelling or living in(ie: bottlenecks, draws, funnels, ridges, meadows, game path intersections, rublines, scraps and wooded areas close to bedding and between food & water sources or the actual water and food sources themselves).
Like the others have said without specifics, it is pretty hard to pin down what you may do to improve your odds, but these are the basics that deer hunters follow and usually it is experience & area knowledge that play the other big part. Unfortunately that is something that will come with time and is pretty hard to tell or type. Just keep trying, do lots of scouting and homework.
Good luck and don't be affraid to try something a little different, you may just stumble onto the mother load!!!!
