220 Swift
Fell in love with this round many years ago as a young whipper snapper. For many years it was a dream to some day own one but not just any one. First one I came across for sale was a very early Winchester model 70 with a bull barrel. That thing had to weigh 15 pounds I felt at the time and I although a young man still didn't want to pack that thing into a area with coyotes.
After a bunch more years I went on a quest to put one in my safe, no internet at the time but lots of yellow pages and calls to dertroctory assistance. AS far south as Toledo Ohio and as far north as Clare Michigan I called gun shops to find what I was looking for. Finally I struck pay dirt at a gun shop north of Flint Michigan. A used Ruger model 77 tang safety in 220 Swift just barely used being sold on consignment for a young fellow who had bought the rifle for his dad. His dad passed away shortly after the purchase. I have now had it for over 10 years shot a bunch of coyotes with it along with crows, whistle pigs and assorted possums and coons. :D Al |
I love my 220's. I am on my 4th one now. Had a Ruger MK ll target, Ruger M77V heavy barrel, I now have a Ruger No.1 heavy barrel and a Savage 112 BVSS-S heavy barrel. Love them!! Another farm kid in High School got me started on them and I have had/have various other calibers of lightweight rounds, but I always seem to go back to my Swift when it comes to coyote slayers.

I hand load a Hornady 55gr. Amax with IMR 4064 to a speed of about 3800FPS. half inch low at 100 yards makes it a dead on aim out to 600 yards.

I must be misreading this;
".........half inch low at 100 yards makes it a dead on aim out to 600 yards." Al Please explain how this works ? |
Seems screwy. I show over 10" high at 100 with a 600yrd zero with the 55grn V-max at 3800fps. Never seen a .224" 55grn Amax, that'd be a nice bullet to get ahold of.

The 55gr. are no longer made you have to use the 52gr. or 75gr.

If you've a 1/12 twist, may I suggest this:
Swift Scirocco II 62gr. ballistic boat tail BC = .307 Or Nosler 60gr. ballistic tip Boat tail BC= .270 While they are both heavier & require a faster twist barrel than a standard 220 Swift barrel, they are great yote killers when you wish to reach out and touch them at 400 yds & get nice sure 1 shot kills on even the big northern yotes that can go 50+ lbs. I don't own a 220 Swift myself, but I've shot 22-250's for over 40 years. Were the factory loads & high grade brass easier to get I'd have to have a Swift. I"m thinking real hard about a 22 CHeetah for my next speed gun. Will allow me use of Lapua brass & faster than a 22-250 or Swift. But the Swift is a great round & you guys are rightly very proud of your rifles. |
Are you talking about some kind of mil-dot scope?
