Limbhangers is good for me

Also, I'm happy to be captain as necessary, but just as happy to let someone else to the helm

shemp 03-22-2017 10:07 AM

Also, Added some points for our team this morning!!! Osceola down on a public romp and stomp, 38 yards, no flopping

zmax hunter 03-22-2017 12:18 PM

Now Team Business
For Captain -shemp has 2 votes mine and jrbsr

For Team Name
There have been several suggestions
We need to pick soon.

AND HOW THIS WILL WORK.
Some of us are more active here and others are not. Even tho they have checked in. They know we are here.
So vote on a name. We don't need a majority.

Uncle Nicky 03-23-2017 11:11 AM

LOL...I'm fine with Team 2.

Heading to Georgia this weekend, hope to come back with a bird or two and some pictures to post!

Team 2 works for me too or some other name.
Good luck in Georgia.
I hunted by Abbeville GA for a few yrs with a guy whom I met here! It was thru this contest we developed a very strong friendship. He always argued his Eastern strain was tougher than the Northern eastern strain. So I came down and whacked my share. Altho dressed in a suit of armor. I hate snakes. He hated snow. And couldn't believe I drive on frozen lakes to fish.

☆R.I.P. Dog1.......I miss you buddy.

So good luck to you Uncle Nicky.... I'll whisper in the old dog's ear and surely he will be there to help. He was a very good turkey hunter.

Uncle Nicky 03-23-2017 04:53 PM

Thanks for the words of encouragement J.W.

I have a couple buddies that live in Albany, I head down to turkey hunt every year, some years are better than others. I wouldn't say the birds I've hunted down there were particularly tough, IMHO toughest birds are public land Osceolas, followed very closely by PA or NY public land mountain birds. We always squeeze in a hog hunt the last 2 days, I have actually hog hunted in Abbeville, but this year will be hog hunting near Vidalia.

shemp 03-24-2017 05:13 AM

I've always heard Osceolas are more inclined to come in to you, and Easterns are more inclined to gobble to you but never move.

The only Easterns I've ever hunted are probably Osceola hybrids in North Florida. The onyl other Easterns I've seen much are in western MN in the summer. They are big birds, and don't seem overly shy of people. Probably the difference beteen living on crop farms vs. public swamp / timber / cattle operations. No idea if they'd come to a call well in turkey season, but they still gobble from a 1/2 mile off in June when we're there to fish. Was hoping to go this year; family travel intervened. Maybe next year.

I will say Osceolas def. sneak in on you, often quiet, and do what I call the 'Osceola Circle' to come in behind you. Always a good idea to be back in the woods a bit and if you haven't heard him in a while just yelp once or cut twice and scratch some leaves. BUT, if they're in a pasture, they probably hunt the same as pasture birds anywhere humid and flat

jrbsr 03-24-2017 06:24 PM

Bird down

Got us a 2 year old bird this morning. Hope my pictures are sufficient. I forgot to get a picture with me and the bird, but got picture of the bird and measurements after I had cut the beard and legs off. Had 9.5" beard, one spur 7/8" the other 1".

JW 03-24-2017 06:56 PM

Holler Back it is
a good name.

I like different creative names.

Hey be safe out there.
Just was sent a pic of a field with 80 birds in it. I blew the picture and can see lots of struttin.
Now to see if the landowners will let me on.

And they know who I am.
One of the perks of being the area hunter ed instructor

Holler Back ,..i like it!
Saw a team on another forum,..Flippin the Bird,..lol

Congrats on the kill!

Hope they let you hunt the birds!!

Our birds are crazy vocal..slam a door, they gobble,..lightning, backfire, rev your engine, bang a sledge on steel...shoot a gun...coyote howl,..just about you name a loud noise,..they will gobble...obviously not always..but often enough.

JW 03-24-2017 08:11 PM

☆☆ Holler Back ~☆☆

There we're off!
I edited shemp 1st post to fix the name.

Soon this northern boy hopes to add to the southern total.

But I'm still buying tags. We can 1 per day till they are gone.
Which is never. You could hunt somewhere in this state on the last day if you wanted.
my tag total = 5 so far and 4 more to get.

I've been known to sleep in the woods till the next day 8f need be. Lol

zmax hunter 03-29-2017 07:52 PM

Its not like i dont have dozens of farms to hunt, but i just picked up permission for 40acres of Turkey Heaven. Current plan is to Archery hunt it beginning 4/4.

SouthernStrut56 03-30-2017 04:32 PM

Man its been so long since ive been on here i cant remember how to get my pictures on here. Can i not just upload an attachment from my computer? Or do i still have to do the photobucket deal?

SouthernStrut56 03-30-2017 04:55 PM

One of the pictures is of the base of the beard showing fresh pink meat to prove it was a recent kill. I forgot to get pictures of me with the bird because I was alone. 7/8" spur and 1" spur, 9.5" beard, 18.2 lbs

Uncle Nicky on the board! Just go back from Georgia, birds very quiet, but managed to knock 2 down. One jake, one gobbler. Didn't have a scale to weigh him, but my best guess was in the 19-20# range. I will measure the beard & take pictures when I get time, guessing 7/8" spurs & 9 1/2" beard.

Congrats! Thats a good size bird. Were they henned up pretty bad still?

Uncle Nicky 04-02-2017 04:20 AM

Fla Boy- not even henned up, still in family groups (jakes, gobblers & hens). Could have shot two gobblers on the second day (came into decoys as a group), but didn't want to tag out and sit around, let the other gobblers walk figuring I'd get another shot before I left but it didn't work out. Driest I have ever seen it there, it was a pleasure sneaking around the firebreaks and knot having to slog through mud & knee-high water this year.

JW 04-02-2017 06:03 AM

Here in Wi the birds still tightly flocked in groups of 70 or more......and no gobbling but are strutting. Males starting to chase each other.

Uncle Nicky 04-02-2017 06:07 PM

Updated pictures & scoring...both spurs 7/8", beard looks to be 10.5", and I'm estimating the weight at 19.5#...NWTF score of 58.

FlaBoy18 04-04-2017 01:44 PM

Uncle nicky i dont see ur bird on the score post or team scores

Added my information to the score post. Thanks!!

superstrutter 04-07-2017 06:29 PM

Nicky, I did get your measurements, but the weight of your bird is just an estimate. I'm not sure if you can submit the score on a bird with an estimated weight. One of the requirements is the actual weight of the bird. Make sure you weigh your bird.

SouthernStrut56 04-09-2017 10:00 AM

Bird 2

Got us another one this morning. A hard earned mature bird on a morning of plenty of gobbles. An awesome morning in God's woods. Bird had a 10" beard, 1-1/8" spurs, but was a lighter bird (expected a little later in the season here) at 17 lbs 13 oz. Score of 60.3125.

Will post pictures from laptop tonight.
