Totally off subject but finally picked up a gun I've been looking for a long time. Savage model 24D series P, .22lr over 20 gauge, will be putting a vortex red dot on it, should be the ticket for squirrels, will keep a couple OO buck in my pocket in case I jump Bambi or Bambi's mother! Got a killer deal on it at a local pawn shop. Just had to brag to people I don't have to explain everything to.

I'm hard at it but having nothing but bad luck. I've seen more hunters out here in west Oklahoma then I've ever seen. I passed a jake last weekend but that's the last turkey I've seen. The weather for cast looked great a few days back the I get out here and it's blowing 30 to 40 mph. Kinda hung up on if I should throw the towel in for out here. My father in law has a lease a little closer to the house but the turkey don't come on the property. They tend to stay at the neighbors

Sometimes the weather won't cooperate, don't know the terrain where you are hunting but wind or no wind the birds are still there. When i'm out on a windy day i'll try to intercept birds when they are moving, i've seen birds avoid noisy cover because there is too much movement and noise and they will get out in the open. I'll post up on a head of woods and try to pick one off as they move.

The terrain out there is mainly wide open grassland with some deep draws. They pretty much take off across the open areas. The main problem is just all the hunters that were out there this year. It's been crazy. I've called them in and had to stand up before getting shot several times. I located a tom yesterday morning but within the first 15 minutes of coming off the roost he and his 10 hens were a mile away. In about 30 min I glassed them about 3 miles away on a wheat field.

I was able to get on my favorite unit yesterday evening but while walking in someone had dumped several bags of cracked corn out. Here in Oklahoma it's illegal to bait turkeys so I had to leave the unit. Just 1 thing after another lol

Here not many hunters hunt after 11 am if you can go back in an area after 1pm and catch them on the way back to strut or roost area, I find gobblers and flocks come back around in the afternoon and here gobblers get lonely after 3pm.

That's how I normally get em here. The problem is its 30k acres but it's all small sections spread out over 40 or so miles. It's almost like they've been ran to private land and know better lol. I use to be able to hunt some of the private that borders some really good land but the land owner leased ot out this year. I'm still hitting it hard though. I have a guy that will let me hunt his place for a 200$ trespass fee here closer to the house. I might take him up on it. Next weekend is our last one so I gotta decide lol. I've never paid to hunt turkeys but that might be a safer rout the way it's been going. Another guy said he'll take me out in Missouri but it's about a 10 hr drive. Not sure the boss will let me lol

today was the opener. I had 2 going on roost. Jakes I believe. Shots all around me... private land. state land... at least 4 shots within easy range of the all the birds I have been watching. I'll try again tomorrow am.

I'll be going back to Arkansas this weekend to try and get my second bird there. That will be it for me this season. I called in a longbeard for a friend Saturday. It was his first this season. I know some of you are just now really getting out to hunt. Good luck to all of you. We need some more birds. Most of all, be careful and have fun.

I joined a hunt club in Virginia, mostly so that I would have a place to hunt with my turkey dog in the fall. I know there is a good bird population there. It was my first time hunting the club, and one of the other members was kind enough to team up with me and show me some hotspots. We heard quite a few birds gobble on the roost, but couldn't pull any our way after flydown. Around 8:30 we decided to move on to greener pastures. At the next stop, we made a couple calls and heard 2 sound off. He headed for the closer gobbler, I took the further one. I knew the bird was in a field over the top of a small hill, so I stayed as low as possible until I got even with the field, stopped calling about 200 yards before I reached the field. Once I reached the top of the hill, I peaked my head out and saw (and heard) the tom, he was about 75 yards past the woodline out in the field, gobbling, strutting, and heading my way! I got in place at the crest of the hill (on my belly) and just waited for him to come in, scratching the leaves and letting out a putt once or twice. I let him get as close as I dared (25 yards) before I let the lead fly, he was in full strut but had his neck way up high, I know he was looking for me. The whole time I was moving on him and waiting for a shot, he would let out a gobble every 2 minutes or so, one of those kamikaze birds.

I would have liked to kill my first bird in VA with my dog, but it wasn't meant to be. I still have a lot of season left, will probably get back to VA at least one more time this season, and I'm headed to the PA mountains for a few days next week, I'll probably make it to NJ and NY once or twice before May is over also. With some luck, I will have another picture or two to post up. :D

downpour this am.. spent the day in the ER w my fiancé yesterday. Had food poisoning and was so dehydrated from being sick that she passed out twice. They kept her there for 6+ hours and gave her 5 liters of fluids. I had early meetings today and have to play catchup from yesterday. I hope to get out tomorrow am...
