Sorry the pics come out weird and huge on this site.
....and now for the rest of the story:

It's been crazy the last two weeks. Last week I fought the weather to hunt. Started out Wednesday the 20th, I put my friend Tim in the sweet spot along a woodline facing out into a field where we had roosted a tom the night before. About 0615, another hunter comes walking across the field with a light on lit up like a Christmas tree and almost trips over the decoys, then walks off in another direction. A little later, we hear the tom fly down and go in the other direction.

Day 2 was wet and eventless.

Day 3, I set up on the same tom in a different roost location. A hen flies down from the tree directly above me. I see him fly straight down, gobble twice and go to the hen.

Week 2. Wednesday. Set up in a field along creek bed. Some gobbles on the other side of the creek in the woods. Other than that, nothing. I decide to leave my comfort zone and reliance on decoys. We scout the woods for a plan to set up under the roost the next day.

Thursday. We sat on opposite sides of the woods where they seem to be traveling from the roost. Tom gobbles a few times and a hen starts calling to him. I call fight with her for awhile as he continues to gobble, then flies down directly between us and stands on a log and struts and gobbles for awhile, just out of 50 yard range. I finally get him to start coming with purrs, but he gets frustrated from not seeing the hen and starts to walk toward where the hens are roosted. He barely comes into range at 45 yards and I drop him.

Friday. I go to another property I deer hunt, but have never turkey hunted on yet. I had no idea where any of the roosting areas were. Walked into the woods and sat down. At daylight, I could hear gobbles from about half a dozen different locations. I chose one that was the closest to me and walked down the edge of the field about 70 or so yards from the corner where he was roosted and sat down. He would answer my calls and was gobbling his head off. He finally flies out and lands in the corner of the woods and continues to walk about 35-40 yards out from me. When he was directly in front of me, I aim at his head and pull the trigger.... "Click." The gun didn't fire. I opened the bolt action and closed it again and aimed and pulled the trigger again.... "Click." Meet "Lucky the Turkey". He walks off across the field. I eventually hear him gobble again and see him go to a hen on the other side of the field. I pull the shell out of the chamber. The firing pin had hit the shell, but it didn't fire. I put a different shell in and after a while I walk over close to where I last saw him and sat down along a logging trail, just inside the woods. All gobbling stopped for about an hour. Then I heard one gobbling farther back in the woods. I slowly work my way down the logging trail to as close as I can get without being seen. I grab a tree on the edge of an opening about a hundred or so yards from where I heard them. They quit gobbling for awhile, so I decided to stand up and try to pee. I look around and about a hundred yards or so away is a tom feeding in a field just along the edge of a fence row, so I just sit back down. A little later I hear a gobble just inside the woods and see a tom strut and walking across the woods. I call and he shuts up. A few minutes later, I see a head bobbing in the brush about 50 or so yards away. Then I see two heads, then three. Meet "Larry, Curly, and Mo." The come closer, about 30 or so yards away and all 3 are strutting and spitting and drumming. I pick out the lead tom, "Moe," who is strutting the most. I aim for his head and pull the trigger. "Click." Again, the gun doesn't shoot. I cycle another shell in that I know came from a different box of ammo and look back up. The 3 stooges are still standing there looking at me. I aim at "Moe" again and pull the trigger. Boom. "Moe" drops to the ground and the other two stooges run off. When I finally look at the second shell, same deal. Must have been bad ammo. Both tags punched, time to help others.

It looks like I will finally be able to get back out there Tuesday morning. Hoping it's a good day. It will be almost 2 weeks since anyone has been out there so hopefully it will be like a first day hunt.
