I nominate JoeA for Captain.

ManofTheFall 03-10-2015 09:18 PM

Our season here in Ohio starts April 20th. But, I will be taking my grandson out on the 18th for youth season.

jmedenf 03-11-2015 06:09 AM

Last year I ended up shooting a jake near the end of the season, but also got my longest beard at 11 1/2 inches. 2013 we had very few birds in my area and I took a jake. Funny thing is, I had just let a long beard walk by my because the bird behind him was coming in strutting. Couldn't shoot that first bird before I saw the second, and ended up with a jake. 2007-2012: Two good toms every year. In 2012, first time hunting in West Texas, first time on that PUBLIC land, first time hunting Rios, first time I had even pulled a call out that year. My calling sounded like crap. Here came two toms, dropped one of them. Dumb luck I guess.

turkman1 03-11-2015 01:17 PM

Sorry guy I can be a Captain this year.

JoeA 03-11-2015 02:19 PM

Hey Turk! Are you offering to be captain? Or did you mean to type "Can't"?

JoeA 03-12-2015 09:37 AM

The name selection process seems to have stalled out. Team Turknado did get votes from 4 members, not counting RI... who put it out for nomination. It also got 1 semi-against.

There were many other names offered, but none really got any votes

Sooo..can we, as a team be happy with Team Turknado?

daveco 03-12-2015 11:45 AM

I had said I liked Turknado, but I also put forward a different name option, so if my Like wasn't counted as a vote for turknado, please count my vote for turknado, now.

firelt72 03-12-2015 02:52 PM

Sounds like we are the TEAM!

jmedenf 03-14-2015 03:36 AM

Team Turknado sounds good to me.

jmedenf 03-14-2015 03:52 AM

Found this Turknado pic. Attached.

firelt72 03-14-2015 04:12 AM

Not an Artist when it comes to drawing, but how about a storm cloud that looks like a turkey gobbling and the twister is the beard?

bald9eagle 03-15-2015 04:49 AM

Opening day 2015 - nothing. No gobbles. Nasty weather. Overcast and foggy till 10 am. Probably won't get many chances till the northern part of the Alabama season opens up.

JW 03-15-2015 05:40 AM

Sorry boys retired life has filled up all my time.
I am about to start my second hunter safety education class and as soon as i finished that i start a thiird. Each class is a day past two weeks. While the 3rd class is in session Easter weekend i teach a learn to hunt program for the state. Yep is on turkeys.
Then as soon as the last class is over Wi opens and i have 3 people to help.
Thus i will get here when i can.
I start in Mi on the 20th and should fill that tag by the 21st. And that's a fact. If we don't tag out on opening Tuesday has been a given for the past 15 yrs.
And i will be hunting somewhere till the end of May........

Tagged out! I busted two during the first week of the season. Here's the numbers for my best bird. I busted him at 35-40yds, but it was hardly a classic spring set up. I drove down a fire/forestry road to check some areas I have hunted before. I busted two small flocks of turkeys on the road. When I got to a curving rise, I stopped the truck and walked up. I threw a few yelps out, and got nothing. As soon as I topped the rise, two toms gobbled. I yelped again, once, and they cut me off. The next thing, there's two birds in the road. One looked at me and gobbled. I waited for them to separate, since I only had one tag left. The "gobbler" gobbled again and high stepped behind a bush. The second bird was walking away from me. Once his friend cleared the road, he stopped for a second...Boom! Pix coming.

Congrats JoeA. I still have another month to go before opener.

daveco 03-16-2015 07:08 AM

Congratulations, Joe!

JoeA 03-16-2015 09:01 AM

Team Turknado..is anyone else interested in captain-ing this crew? If not, I'll do it.

ManofTheFall 03-16-2015 12:47 PM

Great job!!!!! Team Turknado is on the board!!!!!

RIStrutStopper 03-16-2015 02:28 PM

Congrats Joe A! You get my vote for Captain, seems like you won't be spending much more time in the woods chasing birds this season. With any luck, I'll be heading your way next week. Got a hotel reservation at Waikiki Beach anyway. I'll find out at work tomorrow if the trip is still on. Turkey season doesn't start here until late April so I've got a bit to go before I hit the woods.

ManofTheFall 03-16-2015 05:17 PM

I vote for JoeA as well.

JW 03-16-2015 10:25 PM

Wow Joe you gotta be the first....say do those turkeys wear grass skirts and big ole coconut shells on their boobies?

I wanna know.

Anyhow just snuck back home in time for a NWTF banquet. I won a Mission rocker, a NWTF fan like threshold boot cleaner and my buddy won over $1600 in guns as well as a NWTF Frisbee set....an autographed box call. our best banquet ever.....Oh I also won 20 lbs of BACON! Ya an am ripped.....pld guys can indulge on occasion..

So I gather Turk-A- Nado is our team name.

Someone tell me the correct spelling and I can get it there instead of Team 2

JW

bald9eagle 03-17-2015 09:55 AM

You want the southern spelling or something closer to being correct? lol

Any turkey wearing a grass skirt & coconut shell top would get a pass from me.

Here's the numbers from the first one I busted.
wt: 16#
beard: 6"
L spur: .875"
R spur .75"
NWTF Score: 44.25

I shot this joker at 15yds. I sat under a scrubby tree/bush uphil from where I had heard a few gobblers the morning before. I waited for the first hen to tree call before I made any calls. I heard 2 gobbles 60-70yds to my 1-2 o'clock. After a 5-10mins, I heard him fly down, but couldn't see anything. He was across a treeline, in a open area I know. Over the next 35-40mins, I responded to 3-4 hens at my 12, 10 and 9). The whole time, a gobbler repsonded to just about every call, from me or the real hens. Once he sounded like he was moving off, I angled to my right moving about 50yds closer to the tree line. I called softly and he gobbled right back, but farther. I waited 5mins, and heard one hen do a kee-kee and then some cuts. I moved 10yds closer behind a fallen tree and tall grass. I called 2 X and he gobbled sounding like he was moving off with his hens. I waited and he gobbled closer to the opening in the treeline about 40yds away. I waited some more, and he gobbled even closer...then I see his head at the grass tops. He was following a shallow dry wash into the field he thought I was in.

As soon I could see his beard, at 7am I punched his ticket. It was a cold drizzly AM, and being the only hunter in that area helped. Good packable rain gear is a great thing to have!

JW 03-17-2015 12:16 PM

Congratulations Joe! Well done.....

JW

bald9eagle 03-17-2015 02:49 PM

Tell me Joe...out of curiosity...what is the hunting like there? Pressure? Bird numbers?

What does the weather do for gobbling and nesting?

ManofTheFall 03-17-2015 09:15 PM

Congrats Joe!!!!!

firelt72 03-18-2015 06:24 AM

Here is a Fact you will need to overcome!

No Defending Champ to date was a repeat champ yet and I have been conducting this contest for quite some time!

Luck to you but the odds are against you.

jepcho 03-19-2015 03:16 AM

My grandson, Trevor, and I went out and set our blind up today. This is where we will be doing most of our turkey hunting this spring. Here are some pictures. Trevor is practicing doing some calling here in the 1st one. In the second picture Trevor is in the blind. I took a view of the field we will be hunting. The turkey roost in these trees surrounding the entire field. Here is a pic of the front of the blind. Most of the turkeys roost in the trees behind the blind. They fly down in the field or in the surrounding trees. The last picture shows that the yotes have been eating good unfortunately.

JoeA 03-23-2015 08:48 AM

ManofTheFall,
Best of luck to you and Trevor this spring. Geat job.

JW 03-23-2015 09:34 AM

I need to get this current Hunter Ed course taught so I can go north. Easter weekend I teach a Learn to Turkey Hunt program with the WI DNR, Local NTF Chapter and my local Trap club. I present the 5 hour seminar and then we take the students out for a half day free Mentored turkey hunt.

Then the following weekend is Youth Hunt. Hoping I can find someone from that class. That is one reason we go the weekend before. For those students under 17 yrs of age we can re-date the kill tag. Make it a youth tag.
Then I take old people out for opening.

My first hunt is 4/20 in Michigan.
And then every day after that until May 26 in WI.

JW

turkman1 03-23-2015 02:10 PM

Congrats, Joe Great job!!!!

turkman1 03-23-2015 02:21 PM

Well, the NWTF Banquet is over. Now I can start shooting my bow. April 13 is my big day to start hunting. I have been scouting, saw some big old toms. I will be going to IL, CO. and Neb. I wish everyone good luck

JoeA 03-23-2015 04:19 PM

Team Turknado, if you haven't sent me a snail mail address, please PM it to me.
