Talondale 03-04-2015 11:28 AM

Saw a flock of birds on my way into work this morning. Warm weather and rain is melting most the snow but more is predicted to fall tomorrow.

bigc870 03-05-2015 02:32 PM

Well guys we got about 12" of sleet and snow yesterday here in the bootheel of Missouri.

But the temps are going to be on a steady rise over the next week.

I am about tired of the snow!!!

The different places I hunt got any where from 3-6" but we have temps in the upper 20's today with lots of sunshine.

It really is about time to start seeing a few warm days because it has been very cold this year. Now I don't want 60's and 70's to much but the past couple of months we have broken so many record low's and are high temps during the day are breaking records for being the coldest high temps for that date since tracking temps began.

I just wonder if it will effect the turkeys with the weather being so cold and snow being on the ground for almost 3 weeks now. Around this part of Missouri and where I hunt we don't get much weather like we have seen this year. I just wonder if there could be more dead loss due to the weather especially the young turkeys.

I hope all the people on are team that be able to go out scouting are seeing some promising sign.

I live so far away from where I hunt I will go out 2 times to cover the ground I usually hunt scouting to see if they are around because some years they are not in one of my spots and some years it is covered up.

Phil from Maine 03-06-2015 02:25 AM

I know exactly what you are talking about bigc870!! We have had our record snowfall broken this year and still getting some here and there right now.. On my way home from work this morning the temps were hovering around 21 below.. Bbbrrrrrr.. It is supposed to be warming up here.. We did have it get to 40 above last Wens.. That was a welcomed relief but it has not stopped being cold as of yet and hopefully it will be changing soon..

I did get to see 2 turkeys roosting in a tree on my way into work which hopefully means there is more around some place near by..

swampbuster 03-06-2015 07:07 AM

We just got about 3in of sleet and snow( don't laugh to hard Phil ). Next week things are suppose to start warming up. I'm ready to start crappie fishing and scouting for turkeys.

I hope it starts to warm up here.. It is March and should start warming up.. We are currently getting January temps right now.. That lieelt bit of sleet and snow would be nice compared with what we keep getting... lol

I believe I will still be the captain as I was last year on our team? At least I am in the belief it is me as the team gets carried over from last year.. My understanding is the team keeps everything the same way??

I am fully aware we have some members that has not come on board as of yet.. I am planning on sending them a PM .. But wanted to wait a bit longer to see if they show up..

Talondale has already came back and posted on our team thread..

Thanks

Phil from Maine 03-08-2015 04:45 AM

I just sent out a PM to those who have not signed on as of yet.. Hopefully we will hear from them soon.. I am quite sure they will all be coming back as we were the champs last year and we will be wanting to hang on that win again!! We also have a great team and a great group of guys!! I can hardly wait to see the turkeys come piling in again.. best of luck to all this year as well !!

blackheel 03-08-2015 05:41 AM

I'm game. Sorry this time of year is crazy for me. 2 big outdoors shows on back to back weekends, filling orders, regular work, and family.

swampbuster 03-08-2015 07:03 AM

Good to hear back from you blackheel!

It is great to hear from you blackheel !! I know how things can get you or anyone all bogged down.. We are so looking forward to this years contest !! You guys may end up carrying me this year with all the storms we have had.. The turkey populations is surely to have taken a hit this winter.. But regardless i will be doing the best I can as well.. No one knows what will happen until it is over..

Phil from Maine 03-08-2015 07:19 AM

Well guys we are now down to 3 that will hopefully be coming on board soon.. Then we will have our entire team back together again.. I have seen a few turkeys here and there but with our snow cover being a long ways from being gone it is still to early to say for sure how they have done this winter..

swampbuster 03-08-2015 06:03 PM

Hopefully there will still be a lot of birds for you to hunt Phil. I think we got until the 15th for everyone to check in

Phil from Maine 03-09-2015 02:43 PM

I am not so sure the sign up date would fully apply because we are a carry over team from last year?? I did send out a pm to all of the ones missing.. If no luck with them in a few more days i will see if a mod can help by way of e-mailing them maybe.. There is not much more I can do except to get a mod to try and get them back on..

Yes I am hoping there will be some birds to hunt this spring as well.. I did see 4 in a tree while driving to work.. Normally the yard they were in has close to a hundred this time of year. But, with all the snow and all they may just be back in the woods.. Hopefully that is the case even though I suspect a heavey kill from our weather this year.. i am hoping i am wrong..

swampbuster 03-11-2015 08:57 AM

Where all is everyone hunting this year? In a few week I'm going south to Alabama to hunt public ground. Never hunted there so I am looking forward to hunting a new state.

swampbuster 03-11-2015 07:02 PM

Went by the national Forrest to scout a new spot that I had found. A big ridge that runs east and west for two miles or so. In some spots they had the ground completely tore up. Can't wait to hunt it!!

I will be hunting here at home in Iowa (2 tags), Nebraska (3 tags) , Missouri (2 tags). That will be 7 big ole gobblers to check in for us in the team total on all birds. Might be able to take someone to Neb this year if anyone is interested but wont know till next month. Good thing with Neb is it is open till the last day of may and you buy tags on the internet.

I love hunting Nebraska went to the pine ridge two years ago. Absolutely beautiful country! What part of Nebraska do you hunt?

Phil from Maine 03-13-2015 12:56 AM

I will be hunting up here in Maine once again.. We have been allowed 2 birds normally.. I will have to wait and see what they allow this year as the winter has been hard on them. Last year they had shut down farther north on us at the last minute.. If they keep the same laws on the books we will be able to get 2 again this year. I am hoping that they will allow us 2 birds again..

I'm for sure interested. It would depend on whether I could get off work and when though. I'll be moving early to mid May. Just sold my house and will be closing by 14th of May.

It will most likely be the last half of may that I would be able to take someone out there with me.

Phil from Maine 03-14-2015 08:28 AM

Well guys I saw some turkeys today!! I saw 6 in one place then another 1 in another.. On the way back I saw 2 deer and then a flock of turkeys with around 20 or so.. So hopefully that is a sign that things will be going ok this year as well. I do expect the birds to be a little light on the wieght side but i will do what I can !!

swampbuster 03-14-2015 12:48 PM

Nothing gets the blood pumping like turkey sightings! When does your season start Phil?

Phil from Maine 03-14-2015 07:03 PM

My season starts May 4th and runs for the entire month for me..

Phil from Maine 03-15-2015 11:20 AM

Unfortunately we still have 3 members that has not signed up as of yet.. I did send a message to a mod and not much I can do about it.. If anyone has a way to cntact them please do so as time is closing on our team..

swampbuster 03-16-2015 05:33 PM

Saw a big group of hens today. Can't wait to get out there and chase some birds!!

swampbuster 03-18-2015 07:41 AM

Where is everyone at? Has anyone heard the status of our missing team members?

Phil from Maine 03-18-2015 09:42 AM

I have heard nothing as of yet.. I had contacted a mod who is looking into it for us to see if he can do anything.. But, until then it is a wait and see.. Hopefully they will be back to help us try and win again this coming season..

I am thinking my hunting is going to be a very tough hunt this year.. We had around 15 inches 2 nights ago and then last night another 10 or 12 inchs of snow.. It just does not want to give up on su yet..

jepcho 03-18-2015 03:47 PM

Hey guys, getting close now! Less than a month for me and I cant wait!! If our missing team members dont show up we should be able to get some from the alternate sign up I would think?

I might be interested in going to Nebraska if it's late May. I am going there Opening week for a few days, not sure of the county but it's the north central part of the state, along the Niobrara river. I already have the habitat stamp anyways. I'm also hunting here at home in Iowa, and going to Kansas for the first time.

swampbuster 03-18-2015 05:19 PM

Sounds like a fun trip Jepcho!! Will you be hunting public or private in Nebraska?

jepcho 03-19-2015 02:17 PM

Yeah its gonna be a lot of fun. It's gonna be private land we are hunting. I'm super excited. We are going to go right from there to Kansas for a few days. Then back home to work for a week, and finally I'll finish with two tags to fill here in Iowa.

SouthernStrut56 03-19-2015 04:45 PM

I'm here. Sorry I'm late. No turkeys or gobbling for me yet, no sign of birds which is very out of sorts for this time of year. I've been very very very busy with a new baby, work, and making calls, but I will get out and hunt a good bit.

swampbuster 03-19-2015 04:50 PM

Welcome back southernstrut!! Good to hear from you.

What part of Alabama do you hunt?

SouthernStrut56 03-19-2015 07:17 PM

Cleburne and Randolph counties mostly......calling for some guys tomorrow in lee county. How bout you?

swampbuster 03-19-2015 07:57 PM

Next week I am planning on going down and hunting around Tuscaloosa. I'm not hearing good reports coming from down there. So don't know if I will go or not. If you hear of any reports on gobbling please pass it along.

SouthernStrut56 03-20-2015 03:22 AM

Yeah not much going on yet. I walked 5 miles last weekend in the talladega NF and heard nothing. I'm standing on a hill in the Tuskegee NF now.
