Heading out for my first sit of the year... CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

fshafly2 10-04-2014 05:33 PM

Guys - I posted a doe I shot this afternoon. The nice thing about the doe is that she satisfies the earn-a-buck requirement where I am hunting. :)

Way to go fish! I also hit one tonight but I am hoping I can find her in the morning. Hit back a little far.

Canuck_2 10-06-2014 09:01 PM

Nice going on the doe, fsh. We don't have to 'earn a buck' and only bucks are open at the moment. Does commence on the 10th, so I may be tempted if the opportunity presents itself. Trying again tomorrow morning for a buck.

WIbuckchaser 10-07-2014 05:25 PM

Well I found the doe I hit the next morning but unfortunately I was not the first to find her and she was completely devoured. I bet you couldn't find a spoonful of meat left on the entire carcass. I guess I won't be letting one sit over night ever again.

Canuck_2 10-07-2014 05:51 PM

Tough luck on the doe, WIbuckchaser. I guess I should be really thankful to live where the coyotes aren't such a serious problem.

What is a big problem is my son shooting the deer I wanted! The little rat got this one this morning, cheating with a rifle. I was about half a mile away with my bow and watching a very nice buck that wouldn't cooperate. But I'm not through with him yet.

Here's my son's catch of the day.

WIbuckchaser 10-08-2014 04:43 PM

Yeah Canuck that would have looked real good one Team 2 score board. I guess you will have to go after your second choice.

whacker 10-09-2014 06:03 AM

Headed out this evening for a sit then headed to NY salmon fishing till next Wednesday. I'll be back in MD Wednesday night and be muzzle loader hunting next Thu,Fri & Sat. After that I'll be hunting 4 to 5 days a week in some fashion before or after work. Almost time for things to heat up.

fshafly2 10-11-2014 03:04 AM

That is a nice buck Jack - just remind your son it doesn't count with a gun, lol.
From last Thurs: this 3-1/2, 110ish, 8 ptr fed on pears I planted 5 yrs ago then left to chase does in the field. He got a pass:

Sorry for not posting in while. I've been out a couple times and passed on a 8 pointer last thursday evening. I did get him on video so I had no regrets. I will be getting out later today. Be safe!

Canuck_2 10-16-2014 11:05 AM

Been out quite a few times lately and had some close encounters but just no good shots available. Like last evening - 3 does and a fawn all less than 20 yards, but I'm out of position and unable to move with so many eyes bobbing around. Two evenings ago I had a dandy 4x4 (which has given me fits a few times this season) trot straight toward me then veer off behind trees just as he got into range. Got to keep trying, I guess. Seen lots of neat stuff - covey of Hungarian partridges, a few nice cock pheasants, a bat catch a moth, and a skunk that strolled past my foot.

We had a nice week of fishing then hunting. The prize of the fishing trip was this 24" brown I caught after seeing it follow some salmon up river. During the early muzzleloader my dad killed this 5 pt sika stag. I killed this 8 pt with a kicker and another doe. The other photo is of the type of terrain that the sika inhabit. I'll be headed out Sat morning to start bow hunting whitetails again and will prob hunt everyday in some fashion till then the middle of November. Good luck to everyone.

WIbuckchaser 10-21-2014 04:43 PM

Nice job Whacker!

WIbuckchaser 10-21-2014 04:52 PM

The boys are starting to hit the scrapes pretty heavy around me. I might have seen a buck tonight before dark but by the time I grabbed my binocs it was over the hill.

peakrut 10-24-2014 01:34 AM

Sorry for not checking in lately.
I've been out a couple times and I had a decent 8pt at 20 yards but I choose to pass.
Hitting it hard starting next week.

Nice job whacker!!!

fshafly2 10-24-2014 01:49 AM

I xx-lunged a nice doe yesterday afternoon.

Bucks are harassing the does and the action has been good. Good time to be in the woods.

got us a doe last night. she came down the hill what i thought was by herself. i stood up got turned got ready for the shot.then i hear something else coming down the hill look see its another deer this one looks to be bigger, now i think this is mom so i turn that way next thing i hear is grunting .crap its a small buck chasing her quick turn around before she is gone. i gave her a couple blats to stop her and the rest is history she went about 60 yards. weather is going to be almost 80 today not good.but they are calling for snow friday night into saturday.that might get the big boys on there feet. good luck!!

whacker 10-29-2014 04:29 AM

nice job on the doe, I haven't seen much activity on the public land I've been hunting so far. There is a cold front moving in so I hope that will help.

fshafly2 10-29-2014 02:54 PM

Nice job JoeJr - what breed is your dog - drahthaar?

fsh

Canuck_2 10-29-2014 09:24 PM

Good job on the does, fsh and joe. Getting frustrated here for lack of deer lately and only 2 more days left of doe season (until late archery latter part of Dec). Will try and match your output but not holding my breath right now.

joejr69 10-30-2014 01:34 AM

fshafly2 he is a mutt, lab husky mix i got my tracking licence last year.it is so much easier to let the dog do the work. the action is starting to pick up a bit now.my son seen 4 different bucks dogging a doe,i had a nice one come in just a bit to late.calling for snow saturday.

WIbuckchaser 10-30-2014 03:53 PM

Way to go joe! Hope you can put a big buck down in the near future.

markjenna 11-02-2014 08:05 AM

DOE ENTERED. I had a big 10 at 30 yards this morning with this doe but she wouldn't stop looking at me to draw. Once he left with another doe I was so pissed I let her have it...SWHACKER IS NO JOKE... I have used them all and this might be a keeper...

Hope to get that big ten before the end of the year. In the last three sits, I have seen six bucks chasing. It's heating up in NW INDIANA...

WIbuckchaser 11-02-2014 03:08 PM

Nice job Mark, I think I would have done the same thing! It's heating up here in Wisconsin too. Had a big bodied small racked 9 or 10 follow my drag line in this morning. Saw one or two 8's out pushing does around tonight in a bean field.

fshafly2 11-04-2014 04:56 PM

Good job on the doe Mark.
I had a fun hunt this afternoon - rattled in a 125ish 8 ptr, but gave him a pass. Saw a few other dinks cruising the woods. Lots of buck activity now.

looking for this one at camp this weekend.

whacker 11-06-2014 04:04 AM

Been hunting a lot with minimal action. Mostly 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 yr old deer. I have seen one shooter but no shot was offered. Things are about to get cooler around here so hopefully things really ramp up, good luck to everyone.

Canuck_2 11-06-2014 11:07 PM

Good job, markjenna. Action beginning to heat up here too, my favorite part of the season. My showoff son got another buck today, about a 168 mule deer. Huge thing.

jonathanmsoloman 11-07-2014 01:36 AM

Excellent info here, I am currently doing some research and found exactly what I was looing for.

whacker 11-09-2014 06:44 PM

things got fun over the weekend, passed 7 bucks between fri and sat. had a shooter hang up yrds fri nite, no shot and walked off, 20-22" 8 point high and mature. passed good number of 100" deer I am going to hunt the big deer till lunch Tuesday, after that all deer will be game

peakrut 11-13-2014 12:29 AM

Well folks I shot a nice wide 10pt saturday morning but the shot was a bit forward to much and I lost him. Not happy here in Wisconsin but I will be back out starting this afternoon. Rut has really kicked in so I have high expectations right now.

WIbuckchaser 11-14-2014 05:22 PM

Sorry to hear that peakrut. Hopefully you get another crack at him.

Canuck_2 11-21-2014 08:21 PM

I fear I have some very bad news - I shot a buck, but look what I shot it with. Yes, I succumbed to temptation and headed out with my rifle this morning. So I'm letting the team down with no hope for any points as this ends my season. Sorry, guys.

But it was a blast. Bucks are running all over in the daytime now and I caught this guy tending a doe at first light. The pair was about half a mile away when I spotted them and I used sparse cover to close to within half of that. Then I crawled 2 or 300 yards and could finally get no closer. The whole stalk took over half an hour. After field dressing him, I had to drive my car back to town and get my son to come out with his truck. By then it was 9:00 and there was another nearly identical buck with a doe standing there watching us. The rut is such an interesting time.

fshafly2 11-22-2014 04:02 PM

Nice one Jack!

I'm still hopeful, but I've drawn blanks or dinks my last many outings...

Canuck_2 12-09-2014 09:08 AM

Anybody having any luck?

peakrut 12-16-2014 10:31 PM

I'm still going at it now that gun season is over.

fshafly2 12-18-2014 01:33 AM

I'm still at it, I still have a couple of bucks running around that make the grade.
