The pic I used for my avatar is a buck I've been getting on camera this year

peakrut 09-03-2013 12:37 AM

Here are a few I will be after in a couple of weeks.

Western MA Hunter 09-03-2013 03:50 AM

Checking in.. will be hunting MA, CT, & NY this season... looking forward to another fun and exciting season. I'll put some points on the board... but not with studs like posted above around here... CT kics of Sept 16.
Good luck guys!

wallhangr 09-03-2013 08:19 AM

Checking in and ready to go. I'll have to post the pics of one that I'm after, but have another larger buck that passed thru while I was hanging a new set last month. My season is just 11 days away!

TX_Hoghunter 09-03-2013 08:53 AM

Nothing to exciting but here are a couple that I will probably target. Both are mature. Last year the one with the split brows only had one split brow. Early in velvet I could tell that his brows were much better this year and his mass was up. I was hoping that the rest of his rack might blow up to but was pretty disappointed. The rest of his rack looks about like it did last year. The eight point will probably out score him but I have never shot one with split tines so if they both make an appearance I have a decision to make. I have plenty of day light pictures also. And ignore the dates on the pictures. I forgot to set it last time I changes the batteries out. Also the rest of the deer posted look great so I hope we have a great year. The contest is fun win or lose but I promise that it is more fun when you win....LOL.

Checking in. I broke my leg this past Tuesday and had surgery to repair it on Friday. I should be good to go for the VA opener on 10/5. I also plan to bow hunt the last week of October in PA (just outside of Pittsburgh).

Western MA Hunter 09-04-2013 04:03 AM

Gotta get the usual team stuff done for the contest... anyone want the honor of team captain and any ideas for team name?

TX_Hoghunter 09-04-2013 07:54 AM

I don't have enough free time to be captain and after several years of doing this I am completely out of names....LOL. I don't care if our name is "Team 8"....

-john

Western MA Hunter 09-04-2013 09:01 AM

Team 8 works for me! haha

I'm about 30 minutes east of Jeff. City on the south side of the river. On the eastern edge of Osage County.

Any name will work for me and any body with the time has my backing for captain.

wallhangr 09-05-2013 06:42 PM

Good with that name too.

TX_Hoghunter 09-06-2013 05:01 AM

Whatever name ya'll like is good with me. Doesn't matter to me who the captain is as long as it is not me...LOL. Good luck to everyone. My season does not start until 9/28.

wallhangr 09-09-2013 04:55 AM

Good Luck Dave. Only a few more days until our season starts on Sunday.

Arkansasbackstrap 09-09-2013 08:05 AM

This is my first year so who ever wants to be team captain is fine with me. Don't have any pictures of deer yet the bear finally moved out about two weeks ago so hopefully they start coming in soon

Western MA Hunter 09-09-2013 09:45 AM

what is an average deer for most of you guys in your local hunting areas?
I hunt locally and the avg deer is actually only a 1.5 year old buck.. sometimes a 2.5 year old. Hunting pressure is crazy around here... and there are big chunks of land w/ very little agriculture. As bad as it sounds, any deer with the bow is good around here in MA or NY.
I do go out to Western NY every year and hunt with a guy who intensely manages a couple thousand acres. He wants nothing but 3.5 year olds shot that generally go P&Y or better. I have hunted there 6 years and shot 3 very nice bucks, a cull buck, and took a 2.5 year old by accident one year. It happened so fast.
CT has alot of deer, but I rarely see big ones..

wallhangr 09-09-2013 09:56 AM

I can count on seeing a few 2.5 yr olds that are hard to pass on every year, sometimes I just can't :) And almost every year I get at least a brief encounter with a 120+ deer, it's just depends on if everything goes right. I know there are at least 4-5 150+ deer around our property, but they usually only become visible during daylight when the rut starts.

TX_Hoghunter 09-09-2013 01:52 PM

On our lease we try to take bucks at 4 1/2+. While the place is low fence/free range we seem to keep a lot of our deer so I often have pictures of bucks over multiple years. Based on this my buck last year was 5 1/2 and the year before that was at least 6 1/2. This year I have 4 or 5 bucks coming to my setups that are mature enough to kill.

-john

Western MA Hunter 09-10-2013 02:39 AM

that is awesome... the large bucks i have shot in NY at that spot have all aged 4.5 year old up to 6.5
