Western MA Hunter 10-03-2012 04:21 AM

had 4 does feeding in front of me last night... 2 adults and 2 skips.. nothing came in closer than 75 yards or so, then something spooked them from the opposite direction back into woods..
Going again Friday... have seen deer same spot 2 sits... gonna make move w/ climber and put another down.

Bible_Man 10-05-2012 06:59 AM

Went out yesterday...saw a good 9 point at about 150 yards away...hopefully I'll get a chance at him later this year! Had a couple does come within range, but a clear shot never presented itself. Found a few rubs yesterday, as well. I am sure they were probably made by young deer, but still exciting to see!

SouthernMDArcherer 10-06-2012 05:27 AM

Saw nothing yesterday afternoon, saw nothing this morning. Depressing))

I hunted the earn-a-buck portion of the Navy Base, and saw a mature 9 ptr yesterday afternoon, and a mature 8 ptr this morning - both fed under the same oak. I need a doe, lol.

Have not seen a buck in awhile now(((

Dave

WNYhunter 10-06-2012 04:11 PM

had 3 does 2 fawns and a little 6 pt in the field tonight. no shots but entertaining

BUCKMARK 10-06-2012 05:13 PM

Heading out first thing in the morning for our first hunt of the season. Looking forward to spending time in the stand, the weather should be near perfect for some early season action...

SouthernMDArcherer 10-08-2012 07:41 AM

Cold front moved in last night. During the rain yesterday afternoon I did some scouting and found one heck of an acorn patch. Nice rub/scrape line running right through it. Decided to setup my last 21 foot ladder stand 30 yards or so off the rub/scrape line, if wind is right I will hit that stand this evening. Keep at it boys.

Western MA Hunter 10-09-2012 04:41 AM

Didn't get out this weekend... had a wedding i was in on Sun and had rehersal Sat... was in no shape to hunt yesterday! :)
Heading out down to CT... nice and cold and raw... should be a good killin' night...

SouthernMDArcherer 10-09-2012 12:59 PM

Hit the new stand location lastnight. slipped in at 3pm and at 3:45 I had two bucks cruise by at 60 yards. As soon as I saw them I knew they were nothing special, first was a 100 class 8 point. second buck was a good size fork buck, large rack large body but I could tell he was young.

Around 4:30 the wind did a complete 180, sat there for 10 minutes to see if it would switch back and it didnt. Got down and relocated to a better stand for the east wind. Saw 1 doe at 40 yards around 6pm, no shot.

fshafly2 10-10-2012 03:36 AM

I've been going out most evenings and have drawn blanks on my last several hunts. Paying my dues, lol.

I took Ruby on a tracking job yesterday morning and she got her first find of the season. She tracked a gut shot doe ~450 yds from where the doe was hit the previous evening. We had almost a 1/4" of rain on the trail during the night, so there was no visible sign. The track took her with 10' of a smelly blue-tongue deer carcass that she ignored.

nice passing on bucks... where I hunt primarily in CT, MA, & local NY, any buck is a good a buck... When i head out to Western NY next week, that is a strict hunt... need to shoot mature deer... 120 class plus, which is a great deer for the Northeast...
saw small buck last night... no shot... but would have shot him if i could have.. I leave for NY trip 19th and will be hunting 20-24. I have been out here 5 years and have shot 4 mature bucks... a 140 class and 2 130 class deer... i did take one that scored only around 100", but he was an old cull buck..
most of the deer I take locally are little... forks, 6 pts, etc...

I will be heading to KY 2nd week of november.. but it is a rifle hunt... would prefer bow, but going w/ some family and that's what they wanted...

Well the grounds I hunt generally does not hold any 130+ deer. Been hunting it for seven years and a few things I learned early on about this property are:
1. Stay on the doe and the big boys will eventually show up.
2. I always catch a glimps of atleast two to three good 130+ deer during the rut who move into my neck of the woods looking for doe.
3. My goals for each year are generally based off what the farmer tells me he has been seeing.

There are no cultivated fields within three miles of this property, this is big woods hunting if you want to call it that. Moving from beds and returning to bedding is my most productive buck hunting.

Acorns hit the ground and that is were you will find me most evenings, sitting among a group of oak trees. My initial thought this year was a 130+ buck but with what I have seen and the info the farmer is giving me that may be unrealistic. I may have to lower that standard but not by much.

Good hunting and be safe folks.

Saw a few deer so far. Went back to indiana over the weekend only saw a small buck and three coyote pups. They havent done much harvesting around home and the deer seem to stay in the corn a lot. Quite a bit will change in the next couple weeks when the corn is gone.

The buck sign has picked up quite a bit in ohio tho. Walked around the woods at my work place and found about 10 scrapes. Planning on getting up early the next couple of days and heading to the woods.

Western MA Hunter 10-11-2012 04:24 AM

spoke to guy out in Western NY last night... been seeing some very good bucks... quite a few 120-140 class deer... i'm very excited to get out there next weekend. Just gotta keep my fingers crossed for cool temps and a good front or something to get them moving..
The outfitter in KY has some real studs on cam... that should be an interesting hunt.

fshafly2 10-12-2012 09:19 AM

I saw three bucks yesterday evening, all dinks.

Ruby and I went out on two tracks this morning on deer that were shot yesterday afternoon, and recovered both deer. One was a gut shot doe (arrow angled back from the entrance wound), and the other was a liver-hit buck. The buck augered into a marsh and we were glad to recover him - he looks like he could score in the upper 130's. It's nice knowing Ruby's there if I ever get a shot at a deer, lol...

SouthernMDArcherer 10-12-2012 12:49 PM

Very nice. Seems Ruby is doing what you need her to do. Grats and the recovery of both deer.

Dave

fshafly2 10-12-2012 07:02 PM

One more tracking job for Ruby tonight, she found a doe I shot this afternoon ~600yds from where I hit it. I'll post a proper pic for the team tomorrow.

Nice nanny Fsh, I got up this morning to hunt but found a note on my keyboard" hey Dad, practice at 8am, need a ride". that pretty much blew the morning hunt out of the water))).

I am going to try to get out this eveing.

WNYhunter 10-14-2012 03:59 PM

Hey, howcome we dont have a score for our team with browtines buck? just wondering.

Western MA Hunter 10-15-2012 03:49 AM

Well guys, as I said, we do not pass very many legal bucks in our local hunting area. I did connect on a "management" buck over the weekend. He has a very unique (small) rack. The deer is not a 1.5 year old buck for this area. They usually weigh between 90 and 120lb in our area. This buck was 141lb and had a larger than normal head and hoof on him for a young deer in our area. I'm not sure if he had been injured or was going down hill... can't figure it out... butcher threw away jaw bone, so i couldn't age him. I will email pics to teammate to post. I taped him out at a whopping 42.5". I have to register him as contest rules state first legal buck taken with bow.

Bible_Man 10-15-2012 08:26 AM

Congrats on the buck, MA Hunter! Way to put one down!

And, congrats, FSH, on your doe. Seems that you have quite the companion in Ruby. I wish my dog (Lab/Border Collie/German Shepherd mix) could track like that. He just gets too distracted. As my vet put it, "I deal with dogs on a daily basis. Bruin is the most energetic/excitable dog that I have ever seen." Must have the dog version of ADD/ADHD.

Browtine has not submitted a picture to the contest thread with the deer, bow and himself in the same picture. Until that happens his buck will not count.

Congrats on the Buck WMA.

Dave

W9ARcher 10-15-2012 09:54 PM

Congrats WMA Hunter on the buck and others on putting meat in the freezer and points on the board. I'm chomping at the bit for my 5 day hunt with the boy scout crew I'm taking to my property in 8 days. Always a good time. Last year we hung two deer and the group saw many more including several bear and wolves. Hope the cool rainy weather returns as hunting three weeks ago in the 80's was a waste of time.

Picked up another doe for the freezer tonight - xxlung'd and she didn't go far. I saw a nice shooter buck (~20") a few days ago, but there was no shot opportunity.

SouthernMDArcherer 10-22-2012 09:16 AM

Well guys last time I hit a stand was on the 9th. Was informed Friday that I have to work Saturdays also. Appears my season has ended before it really began, very depressing to say the least. I work hard all year long to have time to bowhunt, it is my passion. Sadest part is I put a deposit down on the new 2013 Bear method bow, suppose to pick it up this Friday..............I guess I can always target shoot)))

Chances of me getting a buck is slim to none, I will be very lucky to get 2 or 3 sits in by the end of November. Have not seen any good bucks on camera, only hope I got at this point is sheer luck.

Dave

Bible_Man 10-22-2012 11:17 AM

Tough luck, Dave. Hope that you are able to get out more than you suspect. And best of luck when you do get out!
