Here he is. Shot him on Sunday morning. I thought about passing on the morning because of the high winds, but decided to go. I chose a stand in a ravine with rock cliffs on both side. The whole ravine is a natural funnel and it is out of the wind. Figured deer would be like humans and go where they could get some relief from the wind.

I hadn't hunted this stand yet this year. When I got in, I quickly realized we might have trimmed too many limbs and I felt like a sitting duck. I knew if it was going to happen, it would be quick.

About 7:15 I caught the movement of a big bodied deer about 40 yards away. I seen descent height and good mass with pretty good width. I quickly got pulled back & hoped to get a better look at him. I then hit my stabilizer on my treestand and the buck stopped broadside 15 yards away. I knew it was now or never. Without getting a better look, I zipped an arrow through both lungs. I immediatly thought I shot a 140" buck. After a 50 yard scamper, he fell over.

While I'm happy with any buck i shoot, this one had some ground shrinkage. I went from thinking I shot a 140" buck to not even making 130". But I will take him especially in the windy conditions. None-the-less, he is mine.

zubba 11-09-2011 05:25 PM

Thank You SouthDakotahunter.

Sounds good. LaMotte it is...haha.

whacker 11-10-2011 05:49 AM

Nice buck Zubba. Thats a dandy, good mass all the way around

Bucktail_Bob 11-10-2011 06:10 AM

Kurt,
Those tines got beef. Nice mature buck.
What did he weigh?

bb

zubba 11-10-2011 06:34 AM

Thanks guys!

I'm not sure what he weighed, but i can tell you this, he was the biggest body deer I think I've ever shot. I had to drag him about 50 yards and that was too much. It took about 30 minutes and some engineering to get him on the gambrel by myself. I hung him from the same gambrel we hang all deer from and I couldn't get his nose off the ground. I took some pics of his body size, I will pull them off the camera and post some.

BetterBirddogs 11-11-2011 06:26 PM

What a nice buck zubba. Those are some massive beams there. I am surprised he didn't score better. He had me fooled. I can see where you thought he was 140. I would have shot that rascal too. Nice deer man. I'm taking the girlfriend hunting in the morning. She's got a new mathews and is itchin to kill something.

SouthDakotaHunter 11-11-2011 07:12 PM

Well guys, dropped the hammer on a nice 5x5 today. He gave me a heck of a scare... Didn't get good penetration and it took me 80yds before finding any blood - despite have some snow on the ground. Luckily I found some at a creek crossing and then later another couple of specs that helped me determine the direction he was going... As it turned out he proabably only went 200 yds but when you don't have a clear direction and very little blood made for a tough tracking job!

I'm in the boonies right now so it will probably take me a couple of days to get some pics posted - but I'll get it done as soon as I can...

zubba 11-12-2011 06:04 AM

That's awesome SouthDakotaHunter. Can't wait to see some pics. Congrats!!!

Keep it up team, we're dropping some nice bucks.

KCMO Cityboy 11-12-2011 10:54 AM

Way to go guys!! Looks like it's going good for a lot of you.
Congratulations SouthDakota. Enjoy the rest of your trip and then post us some nice pictures.
Our team score is looking SWEET. Keep'em coming in.
I scored goose eggs Thurs and Fri. Saw a couple of decent bucks on Thurs but they never presented a shot for me. The closest one got was 44 yds which is fine, but didn't want to chance shooting through the twigs in the way. The other one didn't get closer than 60 yds. Sat in that tree all day and only got down when I dropped my sandwich (it was still in the bag!). Friday was not good at all. Might take my oldest son tomorrow and I'll try tree sitting one more day.

BetterBirddogs 11-13-2011 05:33 PM

That's good news SD. Can't wait to see him.

KCMO I had similar sh!tty hunting Thursday and Friday. I didn't see a damn thing Friday. I have some nice bucks on camera and the funny thing is that I have a camera on a creek crossing that the deer use that is up towards the road and only about 100 yards off the road. I had numerous pics of bucks on that trail on Friday and never saw a one of them. Strange. Don't know where went. Oh well. I'm back in the stand in the morning. I have the next 10 days off. Sittin all day everyday.

SouthDakotaHunter 11-14-2011 10:15 AM

Here he is... Going to be a few days before I get a score but it should be good... Over 50 inches of score just on his main beams...

KCMO Cityboy 11-14-2011 12:27 PM

DING-DING - We have a winner!!
That guy's a BRUTE. It sent shivers down my back when I saw that photo.
Congratulations on a super buck!

zubba 11-14-2011 02:18 PM

Awesome buck SDHunter. Congrats.

BetterBirddogs 11-14-2011 03:29 PM

What a deer SD. Man he's a hog. We're right in the mix of this thing boys and girls. We need a couple more nice deer and we'll be in the driver seat. The rut is non existent here in SE Kansas. I sat all day today and passed on a 120" 9 pointer this morning at about 0730. He was a youngster. At about 530 this evening I had a nice young wide 8 pointer come in. He was about a 100" deer but for a year and a half old buck he was a dandy. Only two deer I saw all day. Makes for a long day but I love to sit in the woods in November. I'm back after it in the morning.

What a great deer SD. I'd be proud to shoot him anyday. Couple more bucks fellas and we might be the returning champions.

whacker 11-15-2011 04:10 AM

Awesome buck SD!

great deer SD.i would love to shoot something like that..great deer!!!

BetterBirddogs 11-15-2011 12:24 PM

Well guys I had the biggun coming this morning at 915. He was headed for the does that were 15 yards to my right. I had my bow hung up on a branch and when I went to pull it off the branch broke. He stopped cold at 20 yards looking right at me. He hopped out to about 50 yards which is still within my comfortable range. I drew on him and he turned broadside perfect to get another look. I let it fly and he ducked a foot at least and my arrow flew perfectly through where his body had been just a half second earlier. He trotted off into the trees and out of view. I sat for about 30 more minutes and got my arrow and snuck out. I will probably never see him again. The rut hasn't started yet so that might be my only saving grace. I'm in a stand as I type this in a great spot. Hopefully I'll get a shot at redemption. I'm sure bummed out. Hes 160+. I passed on a good deer yesterday morning waiting for this guy. Oh well. Hopefully I'll have better news later. Out steps a doe as I type this!

KCMO Cityboy 11-16-2011 09:22 AM

Man Birddog, doesn't that just make you feel horrible when stuff like that happens. And then you're left sitting there just playing it over and over again in your head. UGGH! I'm starting to think that any shot over 45 yards (maybe it should be 50), you have to shoot low since they have time to react to the sound of the bow. I haven't had a problem with 40 yd shots, but you see and hear about it all the time. Maybe if it is still and there is no wind they would react like that, but not so much if it's windy. Sounds like some research is in order to find out what conditions make those bucks react like that.
I'm hoping you text me or something when you see those big bucks start chasing. I might just get a sudden case of Buck-itice and have to skip work.
Enjoy the time out in the field.

NICE, Birddog. Congratulations. Can't wait to see your mugshot with that bad boy. Enjoy the rest of your trip.
Man, our team is STRONG. Guys, we have 6 on the ground totaling around 650. I have a feeling a few more bucks will be hitting the ground on our team. Sounds like everyone is following through with their homework assignments at BUCK U.
-why is the captain still emptyhanded?????

zubba 11-18-2011 12:58 PM

Sweet birddogs Can't wait to see some pics.

BetterBirddogs 11-18-2011 06:09 PM

OK guys here he is. I scored him at 133 1/8 and I will put the actual measurements up here soon so we can get him added. I lost the paper I scored him with. He's a pretty tall 8. He came in with a doe and I shot him at 38 yards. He jumped the fence and went in behind me and piled up about 35 yards. I then proceded to shoot his girlfriend because that's how I get down!

We're on fire guys. We need to keep killin and we might be able to win this thing!

BetterBirddogs 11-19-2011 06:29 AM

Quick question on scoring. I have never scored the g4 on an 8 pointer. I always just assumed it got scored when you measured the main beam. Is that right or should it be measured also. I know you count it as a point but I've always wondered if it gets scored separately.

zubba 11-19-2011 06:30 AM

You bet, very nice buck. Congrats.

BetterBirddogs 11-19-2011 08:02 AM

If you score that main beam as a last point then my buck is over 140.

SouthDakotaHunter 11-19-2011 10:30 AM

Since it gets scored on the mainbeam measurement, believe that it isn't scored as a seperate G3 measurment too. IAMYOURHUCKLYBERRY did a nice clean job on the scoring of his 4x4 that you can look at on the scoring thread...

B&C has a really nice online type form/calculator that I like using:

Just posted by buck in the scoring thread. 163 2/8

JimmyT and BB still have their bucks to score, so our score should shoot up considerably once those get added too!!!

BetterBirddogs 11-19-2011 01:44 PM

You're right SD its only scored once do my score is correct. Ill get it entered tonight. I'm hunting with the wife. We just rattled a nice 9 in but he came in the way she can't shoot. We're in a good spot right behind our buddys house. Hes been seeing big deer in here. Hes s farmer not a hunter.

pa_yote_hunter 11-21-2011 07:33 AM

Wow....I feel like one of the only ones who has not got a buck yet.....

Season is over till after thanksgiving now.....be back at it soon.
Congrats to all who have posted their bucks....they are all AWESOME!!

KCMO Cityboy 11-21-2011 09:34 AM

Hey Yote, I'm right there with you.
I had a nice weekend. Both of my sons were with me although we didn't see much. I was glad to get them out of the house and away from Playstation for a change. Saturday evening it was warm and really windy then Sunday morning was cold and fairly windy. Thought the cold air would get them moving but they stayed put. Looks like I won't be out hunting (deer) again until Dec 3-4.
Our team is ROCK'IN!! :woot:

HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING.
