Got this great Louisiana bird today (Wednesday) at 12:25 this afternoon. I set up this morning where he had been gobbling before season opened. I didn't hear a peep from him this morning. I heard the hens, but not a single gobble. I sparingly called the first hour of daylight, but no response. I thought to myself, someone has slipped on my property and got this bird. I called in a couple of hens, but no gobbler. I went to a couple other spots and called, but no gobbles. I left the woods about 10:30 to go get something to eat. I got set up again where I started this morning. It was about 12:00. On my second series of calling he gobbled. I softly yelped 2 more times in the next 20 minutes and he gobbled back both times. He eventually came in strutting at 32 yards. I let him have it with the 870 and Rem. Wingmaster HD's # 6 shot. He is a beautiful bird. Probably the best bird I have taken on my property. He weighed 21 lbs. 7 oz, had an 11 inch beard, and one spur was 1 inch and the other just under an inch. He officially scores 62.1875.

Killed this bird this morning (3/27) in Louisiana at 11:00. He gobbled well on roost. When he flew down he went tight lipped. I got him to gobble a few more times, but I knew he was with hens. I sat til 9:30 and heard no more gobbles. I was just about to give up on him and come back later when I called again and he responded. I would call and then give him the silent treatment. He would gobble about every 2 or 3 minutes. At about 10:35, I called again, but no response. I figured he was either coming or he just gave up. About 5 minutes later I see him behind me and to my left. He circled around which seemed to take 30 minutes, but of course it wasn't. He came in very slowly, but strutting. He briefly hung up in front of me at 60 yards. I wasn't going to risk a long shot. He finally came in and I let him have it with the 870 and a load of 3.5 Hevi shot magnum 5 shot at 38 yards. My patience won this battle. I sat in the same place from daylight til the time I shot him at 11:00, getting up only once to stretch. My back and rear end are killing me. He weighs 18 lbs. 14 oz., has a 7.5 ich beard, and matching 3/4 inc spurs. He officially scores 48.875.

As I said on my team's page, no big story here, this tom was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I took a buddy and his dad this morning and it turned windy fast, heard nothing all morning. They left at 11:00 so I went and got lunch and came back. The wind had gotten out of control so I just sat on the cabin porch watching the fields and waiting for a bird to step out....nothing. So walked down to another field, eased around the corner and there he was working his way from the woods into the field. I crouched down behind a fallen tree and waited for him to feed on out a little further. When he did I popped him at about 35 steps. He weighed in at an even 20 lbs with a 9.5" beard and 1" and 1.125" spurs.

Thanks Kenny, finally had something go my way. Although not exactly the way I like to kill birds, stumbling upon one and lucking up a little. But hey I'm frying turkey fingers tonight, that's all that matters to me. haha

I took my son to TX this weekend for the youth hunt. We set up our double bull blind on the edge of a big wheat field. There were some birds roosted about 400 yards across the field in some big cotton woods. The birds pitched down, 13 to be exact. We gave them a serious of hard helps and clucks when they got on the ground and I saw this bird break from the group and run 300 yards or better. He stopped to strut and gobble and then came another 25 yards and did the same thing. We gave him a soft cluck and yelp and that closed the deal. He couldn't take it, about 3 more gobbles and he was 27 yards. That was plenty close enough for DTC Jr's 20 gauge. The best part is that we have the whole thing on video. What a great way to spend the weekend with your son!! He was happy and I was very proud of hiim.
