I will not leave my land this coming weekend til there's blood and feathers in the bed of the truck!

Now that sounds more like it!!

Hey RPD, how'd that hunt go?

Yeah I can't help but keep a positive attitude about turkey hunting, even after that frustrating rant I still love it! Complaining about things I can't control won't do any good, I just gotta get that snarl on my face and hunt mad again. I'm actually looking forward to getting soaked this weekend and chasing birds ALONE.......I had my BAD luck buddy with me this past weekend and he carries bad vibes with him everywhere he goes lol. I'm considering this coming weekend my opening day. War on turkeys begins Saturday

any of you guys use a red dot on your shotgun? my father and brother in law both have them on their turkey guns and they seem pretty cool for turkey hunting...
any thoughts?

EFH, My Sunday hunt ended up being a whole lot like my Saturday hunt. We tried to stay away from the bulk of the other hunters but ended up having one about 100 yards from us. We tried to work a bird that was off in the distance but the other guy screwed things up. Oh well, that is public land hunting. We have a permit for this Saturday. Should be a better hunt.

My two hunting buddies use them and they like em.

I,ve got a buddy that uses one and loves it. I bought one, tru-glo, two years ago. I was moving to another spot and a dang turkey ran across the road about 20yds and flew out in a cutover. Well since you have to turn it on to use it...... well it spent the rest of the season rolling around behind my truck seat!! I could have left it on, but then you got to worry about batteries. I'll just stick to good ol reliable fiber optics.

blackheel 03-22-2011 04:11 PM

I have a Bushnell Holosight on my gun, which I love. Nicest thing is your head can be in different places on the stock and it's still accurate...

SouthernStrut56 03-22-2011 04:18 PM

I've never tried any of that so I don't know. I do know I would never want to use a scope on my turkey gun though. I'd get frustrated trying to get a gobbler in my sights at close range. These hills usually present me with a shot of 20 yds or less, so I just line the two beads up on the 870 and let it rip. Long range shots in open terrain would be different though. I could see how it would be beneficial in places like that. Ethan, quit playin around on the computer and go kill us another bird you slayer!

LOL! Yea, yea ok. I took off Thur. mornin for a couple hours, gonna try one more time before the greenhorns make em to hard to call! Haha! Man been tryin to get you fired up, need some help!

SouthernStrut56 03-23-2011 02:13 AM

It's been tough to get fired up this year bc I'm working a new job and have no vacation time built up to take off. I'm thinking about trying Bankhead NF out after work one day here soon. Never been there, don't even know how to get there, but I may check it out and give it a shot. I hate getting off work and having 4 hours of daylight and nowhere to hunt. I've gotta move back toward my dang land, this 3 hour drive aint gonna cut it for much longer.

Western MA Hunter 03-23-2011 06:38 AM

had 4 gobbling in my father's yard again this am... late april can't get here soon enough!

Arrowmaster 03-23-2011 05:16 PM

I can feel the rush coming. :)

Here is one of the toms that has been at my folks... he just took the pic aroun 1pm today!

IBHUN10 03-24-2011 01:15 PM

Nice one!! Looks like you got him all penned up!! Haha

EFH 03-24-2011 03:35 PM

Good lookin bird westernMA!!!!

I got on another bird this morning. Nothing gobbled at daylight, and I sat at the edge of a cornfield till 8:30. Not even a hen showed up. I had to go to work so I decided to hunt my way back to the truck. After getting about 60 or so yards back in the woodline, I decided to do some excited cutting ( I hadn't called because that's were I peppered the bird opening day and soy my second bird with another Tom). I heard a gobble abbot 150yds and was deciding were to setup. I cut again to check his direction and he was abbot 80yds! I got ready, he was hot and I could hear him drumming! Then I heard a cackle, thought he was flying a ditch to get to me. After about a hour with no show I had to leave. When I started walking he flew out of a tree!!! Guess coyotes or something stirred him up? Well he's around, but that could be my 3rd crack at the same bird! Think he's educated? LOL!!!!!

EFH 03-24-2011 04:47 PM

Hey Western, I did notice something strange about your gobbler. I was on my iPhone and couldn't really tell, but when I got home and zoomed in and checked, i was right! He's got team 4 written all over him!! Hahaha!! Good Luck

Arrowmaster 03-24-2011 05:17 PM

I have faith in ya SS. I know you will bust a few :)

SouthernStrut56 03-24-2011 05:31 PM

EFH, I thought that said "I got another bird this morning", you got me excited! It's been a slow start this year all across the state from what I hear. Last weekend we didn't hear a sound from the roost. The handful of gobbles we heard came during the normal silent period around 8:30 or 9:00. They shut up from about 9:30 til around 12 then they started back up a little. We even heard a few way off around 1 or 1:30. They just haven't been fired up at all around here, but I'm expecting em to start up over the next week. I'm heading back to the woods in the morning so hopefully I can get on one. Gonna be storming all weekend so I'm gonna set my blind up Friday afternoon to sit in it all day Saturday and probably Sunday too. Maybe we'll all score one this weekend.

Western MA Hunter 03-25-2011 04:43 AM

You know what EFH... I noticed that too on that tom... there is actually another one up there with the same tag about being "property of team 4" on it as well!
hehe
Good luck guys!
I still have a month to wait!

Western MA Hunter 03-25-2011 05:48 AM

This guy was down with 3 jakes earlier...

Western MA Hunter 03-25-2011 05:53 AM

Then this guy came down and chased off the smaller tom and jakes...

IBHUN10 03-25-2011 03:56 PM

Western MA thats a nice one!!

Arrowmaster 03-25-2011 05:24 PM

Western your killin me man. Id shoot that strutter in a heart beat :)

SouthernStrut56 03-25-2011 05:33 PM

Western you better knock his head off man! Once again I heard nothing and saw nothing today. Our entire 30 acre field is plowed up, fresh dirt all over the place, not a single bird in sight. I got down there today and my gate was unlocked. Found out the farmer we leased it to for planting corn has a buddy in the club next to me and he took him down to our cabin and fields last weekend. I got a feeling he left the gate unlocked for him bc they know I won't be anywhere around til the weekends and he can hunt those fields during the week. Looking worse and worse for me. There oughta be a bunch of birds in the fields every day with all that fresh dirt.

IBHUN10 03-26-2011 07:23 AM

SS maybe you should tell the farmer you would appreciate him NOT bringing others on to your land. And to close the gate behind him when he is finished. Thats a bummer though you aren't having any luck!!

IBHUN10 03-26-2011 07:30 AM

:)Weather here in N. MI. for the up coming week is suppose to gradually warm up. I hope so the snow needs to go!! season starts April 18 for me. Sucks with this snow been wanting to get my trail cam out but hopefully the weather starts to shape up. Haven't been seeing any turkey's yet either while I have been out sight seeing!!:nonono2::nonono2:

EFH 03-26-2011 07:53 AM

Hey team, Got #3 at 7:05 this morning!! Got the pics sent to Arrow so he can post them. He had a 9" beard, a 3/4 and a 11/16" spur, and weighed 17 3/4lbs.

Got on a bird in the same place again! He gobbled once real early and that was it. I didn't call, was going to let him do his thing when a bird about 400yds behind me got to hammerin! Well theres only so much of that you can sit and listen to, so I split the distance and called.... nothing! I walked about 50 more yards and sat down. I yelped softly a couple more times and put my call down, didn't know if I was even in the game yet, and man I could hear him drummin!! The woods were a little thick and he had walked through about 4 ditches of water to get to me, and when I saw him he was blowed up at about 30yds! Well a couple more steps to clear a tree and the game was over!!! BOOM!!!!

IBHUN10 03-26-2011 07:57 AM

Good job EFH, how many birds are you allowed to harvest where you hunt? Must be nice to be able to harvest multiple birds, here where I'm at we are only allowed one bird.

:cry:Not many birds around like there use to be about 5yrs ago. Here in MI it has always been 1 bird per hunter. Some areas have the spring hunt and a fall hunt. The fall hunt isnt where I'm at think maybe once but I am bowhunting for deer then and thats all I have on my mind then. Fall is "DEER" season to me. Hope you can continue your success at filling your limit. YA! I know I got to get a "nice one" for the contest here so I don't feel like a let down for the team. HAHA!! Any ways I'll try my best the one farmer who will let me hunt told me there is a couple real nice one's around. BEARD DRAGGERS!!:woot:

IBHUN10 03-26-2011 08:18 AM

Wish I was able to hunt different states as well but unfortunatelly I can't!!
