Went this morning and the jakes were gobbling like crazy. I heard another bird gobbling a few hundred yards behind me. I went after him, but he was not interested. Don't know if it was a longbeard or jake. I'm going back out in the morning to work on this bird. Hopefully it's a longbeard, but the way he reacted this morning, I'm thinking it's another jake.

Tedrow, to answer your question, I pretty much use mouth calls 95% of the time. I will occasionally use a slate, but I can get all the sounds I need from a mouth call.

you can never have enough calls LOL!!! evryone has there own thing with calls. alot of my buddies use nothing but mouth calls too. i have seen alot of stutters last 2 days in open fields. one field friday there were 7 strutters and i dont know how many hens, i can hunt 2 sides of that property. today saw 1 strutter with 2 hens in a buddys dads field( only seen birds there one other time ever) he said i could hunt. a problem i have now is alot of spots with a lot of birds where do you start? nows thats a good problem i think.

Yeah Tedrow, I would call that a pretty good problem. You need me to come help you with that problem? I went back out this morning, and the other bird I heard gobbling yesterday was indeed a jake. I'm run over with jakes this year. They are all big jakes that like to gobble. Looks like some good future hunting. I'm going to start mailing stickers this week, so most of you need to pm me your address if you want one.

good luck trying to get the kid a bird this weekend pinapex! and good luck to anyone else who will be out this weekend. i cant wait to get out in the woods, but the birds have disappeared behind my house in the past week. I really wish season started earlier here in PA, but hopefully they will be back by the time season opens since its still over 2 weeks away
