So who wants to be the First Mate? Someone to step in just in case something happens, and I am not here. Like a computer crash, or anything that would keep me away. Thank You. jrbsr ><)))’> |
I am from ks and have been looking into going somewhere else to get another hunt in. I have come to realize that the cheapest place to hunt for a nonresident is KS, WTF. It seems that KS hasn't figured out that the amount of revenue that can be generated through non resident hunting. I have found that to be the same for Deer hunting also. If I am incorrect please correct me so I can come hunt in your state.:D

Jr scored opening day
|
Congratulations.
Nice Bird. Do you have a score yet? ![]() |
20+11.25+10+18=59.25
I'll have JR post his story later and I will get it on the scoring thread. I spoke to my neighbor who you see in the pic and who he went out with, it was an exciting morning surrounded by birds and this guy was Horney as all get out. From what I understand, he had to shoot him in full strut. My hunt was slow with my son's friend. We moved at 7:30( not very far) and got on some birds. Unfortunately, when we finally did see a Tom, he was 80 yards. We got to watch him for a long time though. Next weekend we'll be at it again. |
Tell your son Congrats from all of us.. It is great to see young people hunting..
|
My wife and I were finally able to get out this morning. We heard 11 gobblers on various farms and saw 5 of them(all longbeards). It was 27* at daylight but that didn't hamper the gobbling. They were really getting after it in North Central WV this morning.
Patiently waiting for April 25th. |
congrats to jr. Glad to hear the scouting is going good wv. i went out scouting this morning checked 2 of my spots 4 diffrent longbeards cant wait.

Well, dinner is ready!

Congrats on a fine bird Jr.!

We set up behind the edge of a river in the early morning and waited for about an hour before we started calling. Once we started calling we had about four birds gobbling in all different directions around us for about 15 to 20 minutes. After it became shooting light they went silent. Hopeing it was only because they were on the move we stayed and called for about 25 minutes. My partener then wispered that a hen is walking by at about 35 yards which was a good sign because no one can be better at clucking than the real thing. After a few minutes of the hen sitting, I saw a pair of big toms strutting 120 yards out through a narrow patch of woods. They were on the opossite side of the tree so i slowly had to roll over onto my stomach and use the tree as a rest. Slowly making their way up through the trees there was one bird that was dominant over the other. They approached the trail of the hen and stopped to strut for what seemed like 20 minutes while the adrenaline and cold set in but in reality it was probably only 5. Wishing they would come closer than 35 yards, the hen returned and backtracked her own path. Fearing they would follow I waited for the best shot. He had just walked behind a tree and I set up for the shot on the opposite side of it. He came around still strutting, I knew it would be a hard shot do to it but because of the path he was heading I don't think I could have had a better chance so I aimmed for the head and shot the first shell. It knocked him down but he still had fight. He got back up and made a run over a hill but i could tell he was hurt because he wasnt running so fast. I then shot again but missed just behind him. As he rose to the top of the hill at about 45 yards, I took the last possible shot. It hit hit him in the side while knocking him over for the last time. Still alive I ran to him as he was limping away. We hit him in the head to finish him off. We headed home at 7:20 after a successful morning. I can't wait to get another chance next weekend.

Mine is bad...same Doe following my trail cam. I haven't heard any here in Indiana.
Now when I go to KS next week, they are crazy out there. My friend has a lot in view out there. Can't wait! |
Good morning guys. 4 am and jr is awake getting ready to meet my neighbor in about 10 mins to go find another bird. His friend, my PIC, is up (I think) moving and getting ready for us to go jump into the woods. Who will be successful and/or have the bigger bird? I love today!

Jr's gun had a misfire this morning. They moved 3 times and finally had a bird come in. It went click and of course by the time he pumped it, bye, bye. The four of us are going out in the same area tonight to see if we can hook up. Me and my PIC only heard the bird this morning. He was in a restricted area and wouldn't cross over. On a bright note, the man checked us this morning while we were way in the back. He asked after looking at our license, would you guys like a ride back out? Heck yeah, that was sweet.
|
Well, jr's season is over. He saw another hen tonight. My PIC and I found a good size flock of them but couldn't connect. At least he got to see some birds again this weekend. I wish you guys luck in your adventures. It's been a fun season. Next year I hook up with my son for hunting. I told him, he will be the guide and I'm just the hunter. Looking forward to it.

My wife and I have been getting out and we've been hearing lots of gobblers. The last 3 trips we've heard 11, 5, and then 2 this morning.... all on different properties. April 25th! 13 days and a wakeup!!! |
Congrats to jr again on a season well done. I have been seeing quite a few turkeys no matter where I am up here. I have been seeing them early in the morning and just before dark. There has been jakes as well as some big strutting toms. I have to wait until the first of May however..
|
