After observing politics for some time, I am convinced some politicians do not feel any obligation that their words correspond to any objective reality. Under these circumstances, then, they are free to utter any self-serving nonsense that they wish, and some percentage of people are going to believe it. You know, most people just aren't that smart. Of if the problem isn't that they are dumb, maybe they are too busy to pay close attention. Whatever. Yes, these guys will callously say whatever serves their interests, unbounded by any correlation with reality. Normally the newsmedia would act as a check on this phenomenon. But the mainstream media is totally in the tank for the democrats. As long as the mainstream media enables these self-serving narratives and don't challenge these politicians, just continue to expect to see this happen.

It's a combination of a few things:
- If they dont' say it's Bush's fault, they may have to admit it's theirs!
- many people will believe whatever they are told
- Many people, when they don't have an opinion, will grab the one they hear in the news

Rep. Anthony Wiener says the Social Security Trust HAS A SURPLUS!!!!! Yeah, if you count IOU's from an insolvent debtor as actual cash, I guess maybe he's right.
