When do you find the most sheds
I live in Kansas and wanted to try shed hunting for the firts time and was wondering when you find the most sheds. I now its between jan-mar but what month is best?

I would say in the early spring. When the snow is first gone and before green-up. All the bucks will have dropped by then, they won't be buried in snow and the thick understory isn't there to hide them either. Shouldn't be any rodent gnaw on them yet by then either.
Obviously you can go whenever and often as you like. If you have the time, it's great to be in the woods. If you only have a couple days to search, I'd wait until you have the best chance. Are there going to be other people shed-hunting where you go? That would be the only reason I would give for getting out as early as possible. The obvious ones will be picked up already - think Easter egg hunt. :D |
South side of sunny slopes where deer herd, is what i've herd. No too many deer in my neck of the woods so i'm not the best deer shed hunter.

I usually wait until the snow is mostly gone. Last year my family bagged 15 sheds from ten different bucks. Bedding areas and entrance areas (trails) to fields have been the best areas for us. Last year there was corn on our property until mid winter so the deer yarded up on our property...looks like it will be the same this year so I'm anticipating more sheds. I've got pictures of at least 15 different bucks so far this winter.
