Hey guys! congrats on the bucks so far, keep up the good work. Montana was amazing, need to go back ASAP. Having never been west, I really didn't know what to expect, but whatever my expectations were, they were far exceeded. The country was beautiful, game everywhere. We were only bird hunting since we planned the trip too late to get into any of the big game tag lotteries. The pheasants were plentiful, although i'm told it was a pretty weak hatch this year due to a rough spring in that area. TONS of hens, which is a good sign for next year, and we did manage 14 roosters in 2.5 days of hunting. Had we killed all the ones we shot at, we'd have limited each day, but that's hunting. Saw a couple dandy mulie bucks, some big speedgoats, and a couple real nice whitetail bucks too. Amazing trip, and I think next year i'm going to go twice, once in the summer to trout fish, and again in teh fall to hunt.

As for IL deer hunting, gun season was this past weekend, so I wasn't out, and i'll likely hunt second gun for does, but won't be in the tree with stick and strinc until mid Dec. We shall see if any bucks survived the orange army around my lease.

ahunter55 11-22-2010 07:11 AM

Yoopermike-yes, the west is great. When younger it was an annual trip for me to Co. or N.Mexico for Mountain Mulies & Elk. i'm guessing 25+ trips. I made my 1st hunting trip to Wy. bowhunting this past Aug. & took an Antelope on my 1st DIY hunt.
I'm still after Whitetails as our gunners don't start until the 1st. I have passed a couple little ones very close but killed 2 trees on the big ones (Very thick where I'm hunting). 1 @ 30 & 1 @ 35 yds...

dmax4me 11-23-2010 05:51 AM

It looks like Christine updated the entries and we are in 3rd place. We need a couple more entries to move in to the lead. Good Luck to everyone still out there trying.

sportsman22 11-23-2010 04:19 PM

hey guys... sorry i wasnt on in a while... waiting for the gun season to get done and then heading out for late season here in Wisconsin.... anyone know when the deadline is for entries?

phil_pick 11-23-2010 07:44 PM

I think the deadline is like early January. Still plenty of time to get a buck. I am also in WI. I just got a yearling doe tonight with my gun. It should be tasty plus it gets me another buck tag, stupid Earn-A-Buck... I hate the DNR.

ahunter55 11-23-2010 08:09 PM

Saw 2 Bucks today-A little 6 wandering around & a "possible" shooter cruising through some very thick stuff behind a Doe & another lone Doe...Gun season is the 1st weekend in Dec. so i still have time....

Pope94/IA 11-25-2010 05:37 AM

I just got christmas break to take down a buck. Then gun season opens. The past few weeks I have just been walking around the 800 acre prarie land that our neighbor has and Ive been seeing 6-7 bucks at average everytime and I get really close but there is always something that goes wrong and the buck takes off. I know its gonna be a lot harder to take one by walking around but I haven't been seeing anything at all in my stand...

I've been working on a website of mine and I have a forum up and everything. If you guys are interested check it out... www.the-hunting-place.com
I have pictures and videos and everything on their. I just started it recently so their isn't a whole lot of content but their is some right now. If you guys want, join the forum.

Fellas sorry for not checking in for a while. Spent all last week up in SD shooting some ringnecks. Have to say that I had a blast!!! I bet we seen over 3000 yes that is the correct amount of zeros!!!! Gonna try to hit the hardwoods again starting this week not sure how much I will be able to hunt for the rest of the year(wife gets to start working over time need the money) but I will be out as much as possible. Hope everyone had a great turkey day

SchuLace 11-28-2010 05:47 PM

I haven't checked in in a while. I went out rifle hunting this weekend and got a pretty nice 4x4 mulie. My dad got a nice 5x5 mulie and my brother in law got 2 doe. I haven't had a chance to go out bowhunting lately. The season for bucks ends at the end of the year and then all tags turn into antlerless tags through January. I hope to get out a few more times and try to stick one. This hunting season, both bow and rifle, has been pretty frustrating. I have seen tons of deer but one thing or another always throws a wrench in my plans. Oh well though. I have had a blast so far and hopefully can get a couple more deer before the season is over.

Pope94/IA 11-28-2010 05:48 PM

Sorry guys I failed the team.. I shot a MONSTER buck last night but couldn't find him.. 7 of us guys looked for him in every possible place but can't find him.
I posted pictures of him earlier.. Hes that big 10 in velvet that I got pics of in july. I missed him last week and seen him a couple times this year. This time I had him 20 yards from me and I actually hit him. The picture I posted doesn't even justify him... Hes bigger than what the velvet pic is. It sucks that we couldn't find him.
I did shoot a doe this weekend though... But that doesn't help with our score any.

dmax4me 11-29-2010 03:06 PM

Pope94,
Sorry to hear you couldn't find that big 10. Seven guys can definitely cover a lot of ground. Could you tell where you hit him?
Don't give up there still time to get another one.
Our rifle season started today here in PA. I only saw does and fawns. I think a buck came in at last light because I heard a lot of chasing but it was to dark to see what it was. Good luck guys.

ahunter55 12-03-2010 12:53 PM

Sorry you didn't get that Buck. For those who have connected-congratulations. Gunners start tomorrow so looks like I'll be freezin my Buns after that. I never give up till the season is over. I have passed on does & a couple small bucks...

Pope94/IA 12-05-2010 04:14 PM

Do you guys remember that 16 pointer I told you that I saw? Well my grandpa shot that this morning for shotgun season.. But i miscounted on points.. It was just a 12. But I scored it at 172.5.

dmax4me 12-06-2010 05:47 AM

Andrew,
Glad to hear your grandfather got a nice buck. That's a Good Buck. Most of us will hunt all our lives trying to get a buck like that. Glad to hear he was able. Do you have any pictures of it other than the trail cam pics?
Scott

Pope94/IA 12-06-2010 11:19 AM

Well that trail cam pic was of that big 10 pointer that I shot. This buck is differant. I saw this 12 pointer early this year but couldn't get a shot.

Here are some pics..

dmax4me 12-08-2010 06:02 AM

That's a very cool looking buck. Sure wish it had been you with the bow but I'm still happy for your grandfather.
Scott

Pope94/IA 12-08-2010 05:40 PM

Yeah I wish it could have been too..

I got some good and bad news for you guys...

The good news is that my grandpa saw the big 10 I shot two days in a row during shotgun season so he's still alive.

The bad news is that he is moving real slowly. Hopefully he can make it through the season. I hate wounding deer but it happend so now all I can hope is that he makes it and gets bigger next year.

dmax4me 12-14-2010 06:36 AM

Well, it appears we have dropped to fourth place. We would need at least 2 more decent entries to be close to winning this contest.
Is anybody still bowhunting? Good Luck if you are.
Our 2nd season doesn't come in until after Christmas.

I will be, gunners done this weekend. I have seen one not busted up & sporting a good rack if he can just stay hidden near my area. Mid Jan ends for me.

ahunter55 12-22-2010 03:13 PM

Could have shot a 8 tonight-well 7 now-broken off point. i've seen him at least 5 times within Bow range.

ahunter55 12-22-2010 03:15 PM

Oh, National Bowhunter Magazine, Squaw valley, Ca. just came out & my story about my past Aug. Antelope bowhunt is in it with lots of photos of the guys I hunted with. It's not my 1st published but I do like to share my Bowhunting adventures.

It looks like we are still in 4th place but Team 1 sure has taken the lead.
My father got a nice buck in Ohio 2nd gun season. Here's a picture of it.

dmax4me 01-04-2011 04:23 AM

Is anybody still out there hunting? Our 2nd season came in on 12/27 and goes out 1/15. I've been out every night but haven't seen a thing. I believe they all went nocturnal after our gun season. We are planning on going back to Ohio this weekend for the Muzzleloader season. Time to take a doe and take some stands down.
Good Luck to anyone that is still hunting.

ahunter55 01-07-2011 02:28 PM

Don't look like I'm going to get it done fellas. I have had a great season though I have not killed a deer. I could have shot at least 15 does & though I had a extra bonus Doe tag, elected NOT to. I've seen way less Deer period where I Bowhunt so made that personal choice. I have passed 2, 8s within 15 yds that might go 105-110 & a spindly 7 pointer 3-4 times. 3 Different forkies at 10 feet to 10 yds. & 2, 6s at feet also. I've Bowhunted 2 counties. I did manage 2 misses at shooters for me-1 at 35 yds. (at least 10 points) & killed the tree his head was behind, heavy brush & caught a little twig & a HUGE 8 at 30 yds where I clipped a branch there also. Anyway, killing isn't always the best part of Bowhunting but it does help.
I hope all have a great 2011 & may you experience as many Bowhunts as i have over the years. I'll be heading to Ok. this summer for my annual Hog Bowhunt & meet up with old friends from other parts of the country & maybe Antelope again out west if things go okay. Congratulations to those who had a great season & to those who hunted their butts off & took nothing, be glad we live in AMERICA. Oh, I did film my Daughter "missing" her 1st Deer this year & it was great sharing those Bowhunting hours with her.
