Do You Hunt Deer Alone?

Do you hunt deer alone, or with friends?

Mottz 12-26-2009 06:57 PM

It depends. Bow alone and rifle usually with a few guys. More time alone though.

Much to my wife's chagrin, alone. Occasionally, with a buddy.

Alone..Best way,you don't have to worry about your hunter partner,if he is where he's supposed to be or if he's ready to go at a certain time..When you hunt alone you can stay and go as long as you want..hunting alone is the only way to go..

Prefer to hunt with a buddy, but often do alone. Either way, it's pretty much the same. With a buddy, I likely see him once in the morning and then again at the end of the day with a few radio calls in between.

It's good to know that there is someone in the general area that can help out if need be.

Had some bad experiences hunting with others. They get cold early and go back to the truck. They don't take the time to scent proof their clothes or their boots. They have to pee so they make noise walking off somewhere where they can do that and end up chasing off deer in the process. They feel like they have to have a hot lunch.

When I am hunting - I am hunting. And I may hunt all day if I am on deer and things are looking interesting. I may still hunt paralleling behind a group of does waiting to see if they attract a buck. I like to test and grow my stalking skills and not have to worry about what the other person is doing. This doesn't work well when hunting with others.

I am pretty strict about what I do. I don't drink hardly any water before going to the tree stand. No coffee. A little oatmeal. I spend 20 minutes in the cold freezing my butt off before I go to the stand which always makes me need to pee again. I take granola bars and some water so I can eat when I don't have to worry about the scent of the food. I usually spend the first 4 hours in the tree stand and then stalk my way to the loafing areas where I know deer usually hang out during the mid-day. I like to be able to move if the winds change and hate being tied down to someone else who doesn't take it as seriously as I do.

Maybe I am anal about this stuff but hunting to me is really all about the hunt and not about the experience with the buddies or the conversations back at deer camp.

Alone is the only way to go, but the wife hates that plan.

Same here. But, I do it 99% of the time anyway.

I always hunt alone. Unless I am guiding a client-hunter.

cardeeer 03-02-2010 04:56 AM

Me , Myself and I. I am the only person allowed on my property. Hunting partners tend to mess things up.

I often hunt alone, but I also hunt with my neighbor and his boy some. I enjoy being able to get on the radio and chat a bit, get deer movement reports, etc....it helps pass the time. I know that is not the most stealthy, but sharing the experience is part of the alure for me.

Isn't the desire to share our hunting experiences one of the reason so many are on this site?

Alone, I kinda like it that way. When my dad was alive he was always out there but he had to stay close to the car because of health reasons.

On the private land I hunt I see my former neighbors so that makes my wife happier knowing someone is in the area that knows me. I may only see them once in a season though. It is easier dragging/loading a deer with 2 guys instead of one but that's one of the few positives about hunting with someone else.

At times I wish I had someone else to go with to possibly open up new areas, but I've done all right alone the last 11 years.

I did take a freind (new hunter) with me the year my dad died (1999) and got to listen to him whine about not seeing anything, but he passed up 2 does that walked right by him. He thought he was going to see herds of monster deer and was disappointed. That was the last time I've actually went with anyone.

Same friend and hunting partner for 40 years......Sometimes we take another friend or two.......All depends who they are!

tschaef 03-14-2010 10:03 AM

Rifle with a group, bow alone.

GRIZZLYMAN 03-17-2010 07:57 AM

I hunt alone 95% of the time. That is part of the reason I hunt; to get away from people.

I hunt with my BIL sometimes but I don't like someone else trying to dictate my schedule. He has learned over the years if he wants to go in early, just go, and don't tell me about it.

I like taking my kids out, but their attention span is short, so I'm happy if we just see deer. They still aren't to the point that they want to pull the trigger.

While I will more than happily take any kid hunting anytime, I normally hunt alone and prefer it. Less noise, less movement, and less smell to have to contend with. I also enjoy the solitude, it gives me time to reflect and think.

There is a reason that it is against the law for you to hunt away from VOICE AND EYE SIGHT of a person 18yrs or older.
the reason for the law is, safety for you and others in the woods.

2 Samuel 22:35 04-01-2010 12:12 PM

It is more fun to hunt with someone you know,
It makes for a better trip a better memory and
A better pic if you nail a big one.

The longer the time

since you were young and hung out with your buddies; the more times you moved; the metro area where you live; friends moving; folks just getting old, determines a lot as to whether you're hunting at all or hunting alone.
