Wife called and said my doe tags showed up in the mail today. I run home after work to get them and am running late for a hunt. Just so happens I picked up another place to hunt close to home today so I figure I might as well check it out. I've shed hunted it a lot so I knew where to setup. There really isn't a place to put a stand in the old abandoned farmstead with the really short trees that are just a thick nasty jungle. I plan on ground hunting so I get there and the does are already moving. I sneak in find a good spot on the edge figuring the deer will come though the old yard/trees from a corn field.

I make a fast natural blind and get situated. I barely get done when 2 does and a fawn are heading my way. Just out of habit I glance back behind me to make sure nothing is sneaking around behind. I always try to setup so I have a shot behind me before they hit my wind and this time it was no different. I freaking notice a branch hanging in a shooting lane behind me I missed in my haste to get setup. Well no time to fix it now and I wasn't expecting much to come by that way anyways.

The two does and fawn make there way by me but just out of range. No biggie as I was pretty sure I would see more. The branch was bugging me but now I didn't dare move. The trees are thick and the deer can be on top of you before you know it.

Wouldn't you know it... two does and another fawn are heading my way but swing around behind me. The first doe stops right in that shooting lane and the branch is blocking her vitals. She moves on and the second doe stops in the shooting lane and stands there for a long time. She was a big doe !! 25 yard broadside shot and I can't shoot on account of that branch. Geeze!!!

What a rookie mistake but I am loving this place !!! Does 2... me 0 !! LOL

I supose you guys are wondering why I am telling this... it a buck contest not a doe contest. Well... my new spot had a droptine roaming it last year plus some other good bucks that made it through hunting season. This place is crawling with does and going to be a buck hot spot in a couple weeks. Hopefully the droptine is still roaming or the other big buck they have seen this summer. I am pumped !!!!

Tim: The hunt sounded like a fun! never the less but not getting shots or having them come in from another direction other than what you planed? "Sounds like hunting to me lol"

But on another note that place sounds like the kind of stand i would love to have just for the pre-rut...or the rut itself.

There is no daubt that place will be hot in a couple in a weeks like you sead.
If that droptine made it through last season? He will be there! I would be willing to bet on it!

Just got back from hunting with my dad on the draw hunt at Croft state park. I passed on a lot of deer in the hopes of a big buck, but no such luck. The largest buck I saw was a 6pt and all the does still had fawns with them so I passed on those too. Dad only saw two does the whole time, but he doesn't practice scent control at all so he kinda knows that his chances are decreased. All in all, I still had a great time hunting with my dad, and that is what that hunt really is about for us. Now rifle season is open here and I have to worry about my club members blasting everything that walks.... Why can't these folks understand QDMA???

Thats right! Spend as much time as you can with your dad. family, and friends.
I lost my dad a almost two yrs ago now.
"Boy how time fly`s by".
The last yr my dad way alive he wanted he and i to go fishing one more time.
So took off the time from work and hooked up to the boat and we went.
I will never forget that time we spent together,
He passed 3 months later.
Now i spend that time with my son hunting, and fishing.

Well as for me? I did i make it out to sunday,
It has been raining here this weekend but the only thing i seen was a about 8 turkeys, 2 does, and one yote that i was going to shoot but was just out of range.
Good luck guys.

I have not had much luck as of yet of even seeing deer but today I got a perfect wind for my best stand and we just dropped in temp 15 degrees over night from like 60F to about 45F so hopefully today is the day.
