great job dliz!!! that's awesome. I plan to hunt hard the next 3 days as long as I don't get any sicker!, Ive hunted before with pneumonia, so it takes a lot to keep me out of the woods. It's looking like it will be a good weekend for hunting

my7pointmonster 10-30-2009 12:29 PM

Holy giant buck batman!!! Congrats he's a monster!! Wow.

Ryan.

my7pointmonster 10-30-2009 01:03 PM

Hey dliz, you did hang me a stand right ;)

Ryan

dliz 10-30-2009 02:36 PM

Yo Ryan,

I just pulled your stand today. I'm finished :)!!!!!

my7pointmonster 10-30-2009 08:14 PM

Damn. That's brutal... I'd die for any single one of my old hockey teammates... Where's the brotherhood on this team. Dang...

Ryan ( ;) )

Yo guys,

Here's my story. Had vacation on Friday, on Thursday night went spotting to check out a couple of fields to see any buck activity. Saw maybe 10 doe total in the several fields I spotted. No buck harassing any doe in any of the fields. I’m thinking at this time last year I saw a couple of buck chasing doe hard. This may seem stupid but sometimes by doing this you can kind of gauge the chase and seek stage. Following spotting, I’m kind of thinking I’m not going to have a good day tomorrow again. I’ve hunted pretty hard so far and have not seen a good buck in any of my stands yet. Re-washed all my Scentlok hunting clothes on Wednesday night to get ready for the next two weeks. (Don’t know if scentlok really works but every little bit helps)

Got in my tree stand at 6 am, the wind looks good. I’ve only hunted this spot one time previously this year. I know this is a good spot and try not to over hunt it until the rut starts. It’s overcast and it doesn’t get light enough to shot until about 720 am. At 8 am I pull out my grunt call and give 2 doe bleats followed by a couple of grunts. I figured this was a go strategy because if the rut is close a buck just might say hey I need to check this out. About five minutes pass, and I see movement out the ridge. I can see horns on the deer but it doesn’t look really big. The buck starts to move towards me along the ridge. He keeps looking in my direction trying to figure were the sound came from. He drops below me about 30 yards away and then walks right under my tree. He is about 13” wide and he has 5 points on one side and 4 on the other. When I first saw him I knew I was going to let him pass but as he got closer I was surprised by how any points be had. His tines were only about 3” tall and his brow tine were about an inch or two. I could have jumped on his back. I was so quiet when he got to y boot tracks he stopped and started sniffing the ground like a vacuum. It was pretty cool. I was surprised that he didn’t get startled. After about five minutes be was out the ridge and up the mountain. I waited for about ½ hour and tried the same calling sequence. After a couple of minutes I noticed movement below me down the ridge about 100 yards away. At this point I could see he was a good buck but didn’t really know how good. I grunted him three times and noticed his head look up the mountain. He started moving up the ridge straight in my direction. I stood up, grabbed my bow and tried to stay calm. He was moving straight at me and as he came closer I new he was a great buck. When he was 30 yards away he was angled straight at me. He turn below me and started to walk to my right. At 20 yards he moved behind two trees and I drew. At this point I’m in my tree 20’ up and he is down the ridge maybe 20 yards. I was virtually shooting straight down on him. He was slightly quarter towards me but I felt as soon as he clears the tree I’m going to take this shot. I was worried about the wind direction and if he went any further the tree I was in was going to give me problems. This meant, I would have to wait until he was behind me and at that point I thought he might pick me up because of the wind direction. When he cleared the tree and stopped I let the arrow fly. I heard a crack and watch him go right down. The arrow went straight down through his spine and was sticking out about a foot. He pulled himself down the mountain about 60 yards and stopped. I thought I might have taken out the artery that runs along the spine, so I waited and called my buddy. After 20 minutes he still had his head up so I decided to get out of the tree and stick another arrow in him. I circled below him so he could not move down hill and stuck him with another arrow. What a great hunt. It took me about 1 hour of dragging to get him out of the woods. It was well worth the sweat. Sorry for the length of it but I could probably still go on with more details. By the way, I going to submit a gross score of 144 4/8. What a great day!!!!!!!!

Dave

rybohunter 10-31-2009 09:10 AM

Congrats Dliz, that is a really impressive buck!

MOhunter46 10-31-2009 09:41 AM

Congrats Dave, i cant see your pics but im sure its a great buck.
Well guys ive redeemed myself some this morning. Arrowed a decent buck this morning, decent to me anyways. I got to the tree at 615 and went up about 15' to 20' in my climber and waited for shooting light. Just as the sun was coming up i see a spike walking about 80 yards away on the edge of a feild, and he makes a scrape, pretty cool to watch. Then a little later 5 does come running through where the spike came through, they kept looking behind them but i never saw anything. Then at 815 i look behind me and there he is, munchin on acorns 45 yards away. I grab my bow and wait for him to get closer. He starts walking toward me then turns and walks strait behind me, so i have to move around to the other side of the tree. So i see a tree that he is walking toward and i range the tree so this time im for sure on the distance, it right at 30 yards. So he walks behind the tree and i draw, he steps out and i settle my pin and let the arrow fly. Turns out i drilled him but when i shot i thought i saw the arrow went high, i thought "oh no i just screwed up again". But he went about 40 yards from where i shot him, starting wobbling and fell over. I was pumped to say the least. He's not the biggest deer in the woods and he's not as big as the deer i hit wed(i was in the same stand btw) but im dang happy with him. Ill try to get a score on him either tonight or tomorrow. Here's the pics. I cant get the pics to load from my aunts camera for what ever reason so all i have are the pics on my phone.
Its the youth season this weekend so thats why im wearing orange.

Im not missing a tooth, it just looks like it in the pic lol.

And one from the meat house

dliz 10-31-2009 10:54 AM

Wayne,

Thats one great buck. He also looks heavy. Congrats again and great story. Wayne, I thought about you when I recovered my deer because another inch or higher and I would have missed my deer. Believe it or not we might be in first place in the contest with the last two deer. Wayne, put this picture in so you could view it.

Dave

MOhunter46 10-31-2009 06:37 PM

Ya, i can see it now, hell of a buck man, congrats! I got my buck scored, he comes in right at 90", a lot more than what i was thinking. Hopefully with these two bucks we'll be one of the top scoring teams now.

my7pointmonster 10-31-2009 09:10 PM

Holy crap!! I need to pick up the slack!! In a bad way!! Congrats to both of you two man I wish I could catch some luck. I'm starting to get frsustrated. Anyhow. Congrats guys!!

Ryan.

MOhunter46 11-01-2009 04:56 AM

Dont worry about it Ryan. I have a feeling your luck is about to turn around. The bucks should be gettin up on their feet more, your bound to start seeing deer.

my7pointmonster 11-01-2009 06:15 AM

Thanks wayne. Just leaves a bad taste in my mouth you know. I'm pullin my current stand today and relocating it

Ryan.

reds10ss 11-02-2009 07:46 AM

First off congrats to all who took bucks over the weekend!! well i went on my 3 day hunt and over the course 3 days ive seen more deer than i did all of last year. i was literally covered in deer. however i couldnt get anything closer than 50-60 yards. im actually frustatred because thats how my year has been going. ive had a ton of encounters but just havent been able to connect. i dont know what my problem is!!! anyways boys congrats on a fine season so far!!

my7pointmonster 11-02-2009 08:23 AM

Dang mike. That's rough. Sure puts a different spin on things from how they're going for me. You'll arrow one I can feel it.

Ryan.

KCMO Cityboy 11-02-2009 10:20 AM

WOW!! Congratulations Wayne and Dave. Two impressive bucks added to the boards. Both being morning bucks.
Wayne you have redeemed yourself and have a great buck to show for it.
Dave, I like the photo showing you in the camo laying in the leaves. That stuff works!

KCMO Cityboy 11-03-2009 02:13 PM

Yeah, Wayne and Dave's two bucks have pushed us way up to second place. Way to go guys!!! Well, 40% of our guys have done the team well, now I'm sure the other 60%, me included, are chomping at the bit to get out there and finish things off. Good luck guys. It's looking really warm this weekend in my area. With the bucks chasing, maybe setting up near a water source would be a good idea.

reds10ss 11-04-2009 02:21 PM

hey fellas i will be hunting again this weekend!! its supposed to be good weather, and the bucks are going crazy on the property. hopefully i can get a shot on a buck. i had a 140 class buck in front of me last friday about 60 yards out, but just couldnt bring him in. hoping too see him this weekend. i have quite a few trail cam pics of him too.

dliz 11-04-2009 03:18 PM

Mike,

Good luck this weekend. Hope you get a wack at that big one.

KCMO Cityboy 11-05-2009 06:08 AM

Hey Mike,
I hope that 140 crosses your path this weekend. Good luck man. Weather will be warm and windy for me. I'm guessing that shouldn't be a factor during this time of the year - just holding the bow steady in the wind at that critical moment is all that matters! I'll do an evening hunt tomorrow and then the weekend.
Good luck to all the guys out there this weekend.

my7pointmonster 11-08-2009 06:57 AM

My luck took a turn for the better this weekend,I hunted from 1pm till dark time saturday, on the way into the area I saw 3 does bedded along the guys driveway. Then we put some stink on a drag rope and walked up into our stands. Spooked one that was laying in a fallen treetop right at my friends stand, I went on out the side of the ridge with my climber and setup till dark, and let me tell you. Did I evvver see a monster. I'd be willing to bet even with 4 mass measurements it would still only make 9" total. A one horned spike came in at the top of the ridge from me, 75 yds away.then did something I've never seen before and bedded down. Pretty cool imo. I thought I had forgotten my grunt call but as it turned out I had it all along but it was in the bottom of my backpack. Which I didn't discover till I got home.

Idk if you guys read my post about peeing in my mock scrape, well it worked, I had a hot doe pee in it while I wasn't there.

How did you all make out?

Ryan

P.s. First deer while in a stand, a one horned spike!! Lol!!!

reds10ss 11-09-2009 01:27 PM

well my weekend sucked! i seen 3 deer the whole weekend, 2 small bucks and one doe. i passed on the doe because it too dark, i couldnt see sights, she was 12 yards in front of me, but i didnt wanna make a bad shot and didnt want a wounded deer running around the property, some guys would take the shot but not ethical IMO. i saw plenty of scrapes and got a real nice buck on my trail camera that i havent seen before. all of the bigger bucks that i got on camera were at night. i just dont think the big boys are really moving during the day quite yet. i think this warm weather and the moon has most of the deer moving at night. at least where im hunting. it was also really windy. im going out this coming up weekend. did anybody else get out to hunt??

KCMO Cityboy 11-10-2009 09:36 AM

Yeah, my weekend sucked too. It was hot and windy, didn't see a thing. I'll be taking my two boys hunting for the firearms opener on Saturday so it might be a couple of weeks before I pick up the bow. Ryan, I would be happy to see a monster like the one you saw!
Also, adding to my sucking weekend, my Mom fell and broke her hip this weekend. She lives by herself and will have hip replacement surgery today. Good chance this will take a few days away from hunting, but she will need some help. She lives in West Texas, my brother and sister live in Dallas and Houston (me in Kansas City) so we will rotate during the times she needs us there.
Mike, I think that's a good call to hold-up on that doe.
I'm sure our team will continue to add to the points as things heat up out there. Good luck guys.

my7pointmonster 11-11-2009 06:29 PM

Damn Clay, sorry to hear about that, It'll be alright They'll take good care of her.

Hope for a speedy recovery.

Ryan.

KCMO Cityboy 11-12-2009 06:05 AM

Hey, thanks for the kind words guys. She did well in surgery on Tuesday but will need to be in a rehab facility for a few weeks where they will take good care of her. I'll go to be with her for a while when she goes home.
My boys are really looking forward to the firearms opener this weekend! The best part is they will get pulled from school a couple hours early on Friday.

reds10ss 11-12-2009 01:56 PM

sweet good luck this weekend fellas!

dabowhunter 11-16-2009 11:40 AM

Sorry for the delay in posting. Been on the road for 3 weeks. Iowa was a series of bad luck and botched encounters. Got this ten on my land here in Wisconsin. Congrats to all who have scored so far and good luck to those who have not.

dliz 11-16-2009 12:56 PM

Don,

Congrats on one fantastic buck. It looks like a great 10. By the way we are doing pretty well in the contest this year. We might even take over first place with your buck. Do you have any idea what it might score.

Based on the scores entered today, Dons buck will put us in first place.

Dave

reds10ss 11-16-2009 01:13 PM

great buck for sure!!

rybohunter 11-16-2009 02:20 PM

Great buck, I think we are going to give this a run for the title!

dliz 11-16-2009 05:37 PM

Don,

If you get a chance love to see some more pictures of that brute.

dabowhunter 11-16-2009 06:32 PM

Got him entered, scored 131. Wouldn't that be something if we could win this contest. Bragging rights for a year.

KCMO Cityboy 11-17-2009 05:48 AM

What a beast. Congratulations on a fine buck. Did you get a field dressed weight on him? Looks to be over 200.

MOhunter46 11-17-2009 06:50 AM

Fantastic buck Don, congrats!

dliz 11-17-2009 08:25 AM

Don, those are some great pictures. The face paint on that guy looks pretty good also. As KCMO said he looks like a huge deer.

Its been a great two year run for me with the bow. I put a lot of hard work in each year but I'm starting to think all my luck might run out. I've arrowed over 305 inches of horns the last two years in Pa. This is last years buck. He was a 14 point and grossed 162"

That is an absolutely PHENOMINAL statistic. I don't think I know any one who's ever done that & I live in Allegheny co, where there are some huge bucks roaming.
Congrats dliz.
