Im an idiot

Well i just completly just screwed up this morning. Had a really good buck come in at about 730. 8 or 9 pt, pretty tall, prolly would have scored 120-125. He came in behind me and came to about 15 yards to my right and i was sitting so i couldnt shoot. It looked like he was gonna walk away so i made a little grunt. He looked around and turned and walked around and started walking where he came from. This gave me the chance to slowly stand up and turn around. So i got turned and he walked behind a tree and i drew back. He steped out and i gave him a little "maaa" he stopped. I couldnt believe this but i was calm as could be, i even remembered to make sure the bubble on my sight was level. So i settled my pin and let the arrow fly, right over his back. My heart sunk. I sat there 20 min to collect my thoughts and got down to get my arrow. I thought he was about 25 yards when i shot, i ranged the tree i was in from my arrow and it was 21 yards. There was a little meat and hair on the arrow but im almost 100% sure it was above the spine. Here in a little bit im gonna go look but im sure he'll live. I cant believe i crumbled under pressure like that, but i guess that why i called hunting and not killing. So do you guys think, think he'll be back? Im really doubting it but i wanna hear what you guys think. Im gonna go cry now lol.

I went out and couldnt find any blood anywhere. Im gonna go do a grid search tomorrow but i think he'll live. We're thinking he might have went on the neighbors property so my uncle is gonna go get permission to look over there. I have to go to work so i cant go look.

Wayne,

Great story, thats a bummer that you missed killing him by a couple of inches. I have been taking my range finder with me the last couple of times out since i've been in different trees. (based on the wind direction). I usually misjudge the distance for shot out to 40 yards. I guess the distance and then us my range finder. Seems like I always think the shot is closer than it really is. I've set my bow up to shot one pin from 0 to 30 yards. It shots about 2 inches high at 20 yards and 2 inches low at 30 yards. My heart goes out to you about that shot. Hofefully you get another chance. Its early and I think the best hunting is yet to come.

Thanks Dave. I know, judging distance is something i have got to get better at.

Yea, that's a heart sinker. After spending all the time and effort. We all make those mistakes. I remember a few years ago where I ranged a deer at 35 yards and overshot it because my mind didn't comprehend that the deer had walked another 15 yards closer to me before I shot. DUH! Just another lesson learned and remember, there will be more chances ahead.

Crazy story wayne. Sometimes it happens though. I still haven't seen a deer on stand and I've lost track of how many times I've hunted so.

Good luck guys. And I hope the rest of us arrow some good ones.

Ryan.
