ORIGINAL: LarryR

No nice antlers yet for me,,, just several spikes and a 4 pointer,,,,, I need to shoot something soon!:(
Larry, do you mean that's all you have seen? Cause if you shot a spike or a 4 point you have to enter the first buck killed. You don't get to pick the biggest one for the contest.

I am thinking you have just seen the spikes and 4 point and waiting for the big guy to show. Just checking.

Well guys I have enlisted in the Orange Army. Yes thats right I will be gun hunting tomorrow's Wisconsin opener.

Do it every year. Tradition is a hard thing to break.

I will out there early in what is suppose to be a cold morning (predicting 8 degrees at 6am) with my muzzleloader in hand.

Wish me luck guys and good luck to all of you in whatever you are hunting. :)

Well guys, i killed a buck. A smallish 7 pt (should be 8, but is broke off). I should have held out for a bigger one but i was impatient and had a perfect 12 yard broadside shot on this one. Honestly thought he was a bit bigger (ground shrinkage). But i guess all of us that have killed this year can say the same thing. I still have 1 more buck tag, so maybe i can get a wallhanger later.

Ok Ok.. So this was Il shotgun opener. I know it's not with a bow but trust me I am still hard at it with my bow. I seen the big 12 with my gun but he was too far so that evening I shot this 9 pointer with a split brow.. Just thought I'd tell ya guys.. As soon as shotgun is over I'll be back at it with the bow..

here is a pic..

Congrats to those of you tagging bucks!

Season opened Thursday and I've been out every morning since. So far all I've had in rangeare two does and a small 2x2.

Temperature is dropping and rumor has it that the rut is only just approaching. I've got to figure something better out for staying warm on stand, however, as I've been freezing my ass off so far.

Will keep you updated on how the season progresses. I've been up at 3:45 for the last four days in a row (duck hunted wednesday), so I'm opting to take tomorrow off and sleep in. I work at 10, so getting a few extra hours in the sack will hopefully reenergize me for Monday.

Congrats Chip, every little biy helps. Heck, this is as close to first place as I have ever been in my three years in the contest.

Nice gun buck Chris. No crime in donning the orange.

I did the same thing this weekend. Haven't gun hunted since 2001, but I thought I need to patrol the borders on my new farm. I was only going to shoot a really nice buck or nothing at all. Well this morning a 150" at least 10 point comes strolling off the ridge in front of me. I let him get to 70 yards and he turned to go up a hollow. I had a slightly quartering away shot and let the smokepole roar. As the smoke cleared I could see him stumbling off towards a brushpile, with his opposite side front leg dangleing. He stopped for a bit there and then stumbled thru it. I thought I had hit him solid. I waited a few minutes and got down. Picked up the blood trail, which I thought could have been better. I followed at a slow walk as he crossed a ditch and headed uphill. Halfway up the hill he got on a trail and went around the point and then down into the hollow again. When he crossed the ditch he must have stood there a bit as there was good blood there. However I couldn't tell which way he went from there. I did a few circles and couldn't find any more blood. I went back for help and brought a friend and a dog that has found deer before, but not for over a year. We looked for 2 more hours and found 1 more small spot of blood. We looked in a few creeks and hollows and a brushy field but never saw him or jumped him.The dog wasn't much help. We figure my shot must have hit low and maybe just grazed his chest and hit the offside leg. He never laid down the whole trail.I still have no idea how I missed him, unless I hit a limb. We went back and replayed the shot but couldn't find anything. I am sick about the whole thing, and hope he makes it. The last blood we found was headed up a steep hill so he still had plenty of strength to make it up.

I will be back out this long weekend and hope to see him again and finish what I started, Bow in hand this time.
