Stay on the hot spot Matt. Good luck.

I braved the rain this morning. all day sit, saw 4 bucks, 9 does. one of the bucks was a small racked, big bodied 2.5 yr old 8 pt. I ALMOST drilled a doe. By the time I finally made up my mind, she never gave me another shot.

Back at it in the morning, I'm excited for a first time sit in this stand. Should be good.

RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)

i got a shocker......another deerless sit up in the game lands i been hunting......cant figure it out...if i never seen tracks in the snow that day, i would gave up on it....probably the same danged deer walked in cirlces trying to find other deer to hang out with that night in the snow...it probably didnt have any luck either lol..but by the time the sun came up, it was worn out and laid down all day...i dont know what it is...today could very well be the last time i EVER deer hunt there again...seeing as how i graduate in the spring, and until they re-log the area, i dont see it being worth the drive for a deer hunt....turkey maybe...

last day saturday...no hunting tomorrow....100% chance of rain.....gusts upto 26mph...GREAT......[:'(] :( [:@] 6 weeks flew by huh??

DEFINENTLY working on new land late winter/early spring....i say this every year just always run outta time...i dont have a choice...either play the hit or miss game ive been, or get new land and as much of it as possible and hope for something better...just so dang hard to get permission around home..the only way ive found IN is to know people or know people that know people. mom works for some DRs...im starting there...one complains of dead deer on his fence all the time...next time he brings it up im gunna have her try to get me IN. pretty sure he got a nice hunk of land in a place most would die to hunt...i been telling her for years to try to get me in with them...i guess im gunna have to start begging lol...

Hunted it again, tonight. 9 total (possibly 10). 1 confirmed buck, possibly two fighting right at dark. They are hitting this spot hard, but mostly shortly before dark. I'm going to be at it again tomorrow night.

Mauser, I hear you on the weather. Couldn't come at a worse time.

I drilled my 1st turkey with the bow this morning. A nice jake. A group came almost running in andat 22-25 ydsI smoked one of them. Pretty neat.Drhntr aint the only one on this team to have fun with turkeys. :)

I'm not sure I feel like heading out this evening. Tomorrow, pending weather, I may just take out the longbow and still hunt all day. If its too rainy, I'll take the compound.

Here's the turkey

RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)

congrats Ryan!!! i had a feeling youd score today.... was just figuring a buck! surprised you left the stand today....nothin happening in terms of deer today?? (just curious)

im pretty bummed at the forecast...i wont lie, i may not even make it out tomorrow...im watching the forecast and radar hard...besides the rain, winds are supposed to be stiff...i hope it changes...and looking at the radar, the rain might not be too bad...we'll see...

good luck guys!! tomorrow is the last day for us PA guys...i know if i dont score tomorrow, my bow probably wont see the woods again till fall...unless i get a super secret spot between now and rifle or late season...just no chance of bowhunting my regular spots in rifle or late season...ive done it for years with the rifle and flintlock...if i seen deer it was because i jumped them attempting to still hunt, or someone else jumped them and sent them past me....

RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)

It was pretty dead. I saw a nice buck as it was just getting light, then nothing buta couple fawns meandering around. Once i got down to getthe turkey, I lost any and all desire to sit for the rest of the day. But asI look out the window, I'm regretting that a little bit now. I will be out in the rain tomorrow. Not that I am expecting much. I may not even get up a tree.

RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)

it was a beautiful evening...a littttttle warm, but beautiful out. i didnt get to hunt...

picked up the buck from last year...the mount looks AWESOME...i'll have pics tomorrow most likely...

then ran the coonhounds...couldnt pay to see a deer and we were hunting our flintlock only spots that are absolutely FULL of deer...VERY odd...wish we could bowhunt there though...woods was tore up with sign...they dont mind us flintlock hunting because they dont, and they know we usually take does anyway and they dont doe hunt...pretty much trophy hunters that "get their buck" and they are done...odd we didnt see a single deer...

about lost an eye to a thorn, drew lots of my own blood all over my body fighting the multiflora...and about rolled my ankle(about broke it 2-3yrs ago and it rolls pretttty easy)..dog pulled me and i came down wrong and i had to sit down for a couple minutes..it was close...but we had a good night..3 trees, 3 good sized coon.

dont know if i'll head out or not tomorrow...i will not risk bowhunting in a down pour or heavy rain...i just wont do it. im not a very good or expirienced tracker as it is...im not Indian...i know i cant track em with a washed out trail...

if it lets up, or is light, i have a spot i may still hunt and do some sitting on a stump i can hunt, but its a long walk through thick woods to get to the spot id wanna hunt and cant leave a stand there or access any other way so no way to stand hunt it...no matter what, id blow all the deer out just walking in...but ive seen a couple REAL nice buck in there squirrel and fall turkey hunting..and could get lucky...dad snuck in on a doe a couple weeks ago squirrel hunting...wet ground and windy, i can probably sneak back there to the crab apple and oaks and hang out and maybe get lucky...dad watched mature bucks fight there a couple times in his life...he used to bowhunt there till the field he accessed the land on was sold so now we gotta travel the woods the whole way....so maybe i'll catch a break...never know. out of anywhere i have permission to hunt, that place has the highest potential to produce BIG. just no way in and that field owner wont let up...they dont own the woods and dont bother me while im back there..killed my spring longbeard back there twice...

RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)

Well I changed things up and stayed on the ground still hunting and calling my way thru the woods all day long saturday. Not a LICK of any rutting chasing activity. I walked up on bucks just feeding[&:]
I saw 17 deer, only had one small doe in range for a shot and opted not to kill her. Saw 3 bucks, all small. Found more big rubs than I have ever seen on the property, I am kind of disheartened with myself for failing AGAIN to kill a maturePA buck. This was my best chance ever as we knew of 3 that were living (or spending a lot of time) on the property we hunt and I couldn't get close to any of them. :(In my eyes, that's pathetic.

Well, sorry that I couldn't come through for the team. Big surprise there:eek: I hunted hard yesterday, and saw 11, two bucks, and almost drew back on that 6 I've been seeing, but decided against it once I saw him up close, plus he wasn't turning for me. I'm a bit down about my lack of production over the years. You can get a more detailed breakdown of my issue in this thread on the main site:

RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)

sideways rain didnt interest me...if it wasnt pouring, it was too danged windy for me to be bowhunting...

somewhat disappointed....theres no question about it, i just need on better property...if that happens or not, we'll see. im gunna try like heck to get on some. the people i know with good private land where the ones seeing deer and seeing anything other than 1.5yo bucks. i might not be a great hunter...but im confident in my setups and tatics...i feel i did about all i could have done...just dont have the deer im looking for..(sad because it wouldnt take much for me to reach for the bow..) just some years we got them and others we dont...this year, we just didnt..i knew my honey hole was going to be sad...i know of like 10 bucks that were killed in the area last rifle season alone...plus what i dont know about.....even kids taking 1.5yo bucks that werent legal for the rest of us...

had fun this season though..seen some deer, got a shot at a turkey...cant complain...

got my buck mount back Friday...

im very pleased with the mount...i swear he grew!

ole captain got nothin.....time to catch up on some school work...

kicking around the thought of bear hunting mon-wed next week...id have to take 2 tests friday to beable to go...or atleast hope the professors would work with me...

the non-understanding professor seen the light when he asked how many people would be in class on the opener of rifle season and i think 2-3 people said they would come if they had to...so he worked with us and gave us the day off....so im happy about that...

pines??

Ldiebol??

Bluetick??

drhntr?

you guys still hunting?? i dont know how other states run...us PA boys are done...i dont know if anyone else bowhunts after the early season...i know i wont unless i find a buck living somewhere i can bowhunt but cant get the rifle or flintlock into....doubt it happens though...

good luck guys still hunting!!!

Headed out tomorrow night. Will hunt a ground blind where i have seen that buck going alot. He as not come my way in some time.

Will park the car statigically topushhim over to thewest side as well. Interesting but a techinque i have used before. I park where they normally will cross and it ensures that they head up to where i will be sitting. NOw allthey will have to do is come within range!

Will be off for the 9 day gun season starting this weekend. Headed up north and giveing the local stand a rest. Then back for the late season hunting. Season here will run all the way into january.

Good luck andcongrats to all!

I see we're up near the top, we need a few on the ground yet. I wish those hunting the best.

Went out and had a doe run across the road an nearly miss getting hit. the buck behind her luckily did not cross and get hit. He stayed there and then some guy in a truck stopped and honked at him and he ran back where he came from. The doe came to within 9 yards. Pretty close when you are sitting on the ground burried in the brush. Then after that i had some turkies come through with in the 9 steps again. It was awesome. to bad my buck did not come though.

i am off for about 2 weeks for gun season and the end of the semester.

Good luck to all who are hunting. I will check in from time to time before late season starts.

RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)

went spotting for about 2 hours....only 5 deer we seen in our woods were below my honey hole hill...

went to a township thats blown WAY up...seen probably 50 some deer...3 bucks over 100" and 2 1.5yo...the rest were does and young...could been some other small buck mixed in, but we had binocs on most of them and couldnt put bone on them. im still waiting for the seeking and chasing to start.....

maybe the cold temps kept them from seeking and chasing to conserve calories etc??? could it be they know they are in for a long hard winter(no acorns...its gunna be ROUGH) colder much earlier than any previous years i can remember....and i believe animals can tell "whats coming" weather wise...maybe thats why they never fired up? sit around and wait till the does are ready and conserve their energy...

i might go stir crazy....too cold to run the coon hounds...(cold dens up the coons and snow crust tears the hounds feet) no bow hunting....really hardly any deer around my area....last day of fall turkey is tomorrow so i'll definently be taking the shotgun for a walk.....i dont know what im going to do...Christmas break starts SOON...i normally can run the hounds pretty much straight through the year with a break here n there usually jan-feb when its snowy and cold...this could be a LONG year..........

RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)

well, saturday i went out in search of a turkey in the snow...and to do a little deer scouting since i had a light coating of snow...

walked my whole "honey hole hill" only 1 rub found and it was in the pines between me and the corn field edge...only cut 2 sets of tracks...probably "hoss" my button buck...walking in circles...werent real big...i dont even think it was doe tracks..im betting it was Hoss...pretty sad...i stayed outta the thick stuff just because i didnt wanna jump them out...but walked all the open woods and pines and that was it for tracks...kinda sad...no turkey sign either...figured mom and the little ones joined up with another flock..not even old sign of them...

started off my hill through the corn fields that were finally picked...spotted movement across the driveway and on the far field edge...BIRD! pheasant? i thought for sure it was a pheasant..threw in some highbrass 6s(better than hevishot) and figured id see if i couldnt get it flushed...got half way through the far field and seen steamin fresh scratchings..TURKEY!! i knew i should been able to get into the flock...i figured they seen me and went left to cross the driveway and get up in the woods that they live in...so i started to beat my feet around the wood patch to try to cut them off figuring they were using the 40ft hillside above a creek to skirt around me...i got 20yds to the left and the ground exploded to my right in the draw...probably 30 birds took wing...

i know in a flock that big that theres almost always a couple that dont fly right away...i looked down and was scanning and scanning and found a good sized hen trying to find an opening to take flight...ole hevishot prevented that from happening...i never have the chance to "bust up a flock" im either too far to bust em or just nail mine before i bust em....maybe next time i get to fall turkey hunt with the gun i will bust em and try to call them in before just shooting one...it was fun, but nowhere near as fun as spring hunting...and really i must be growing up or something coz it felt more like a shoot than a hunt...i dont know...without the snow i would probably never looked down in that nasty patch of woods...and i know i would never seen the bird that caught my eye...with a little knowledge on turkey habits and topography, i can usually get a shot off and put a bird down before i bust em...thats my 3rd fall hen and only hunted them a handful of times...kinda fun but i think i need to bust em and try calling them instead of just pulling the trigger...exspecially with a 50yd turkey gun...or maybe just not MISS when they come by my treestand lol

not a bowkill....but figured id post since i got nothin else to post....

good eatin! never made it to the other spots i wanted to check out...had to get her cleaned and all that...not real concerned with scouting right now anyway till rifle season ends...then its back to the drawing board...

Nice bird mauser. When it comes to fall hunting, I say shoot em at any chance you get just because they are annoying. ;)
Funny how had I taken my 1st gobbler in the spring with my bow, I'd have likely gotten it mounted. But the jake I drilled the other day I didn't even keep the tail fan[&:]

Good job on the turkeys Rybo and Mauser! We still have time, patience is golden;).

Glad I took my buck a few weeks ago because things have gone to hell in a handbasket with properties I hunt. My best remaining land has been leased by a hunting co-op and another property(larger but not as productive) leased by the same outfit if you can believe that. They most likely will not renew their leases I hear, but someone else probably will. I'm still hunting on some small property that is sometimes very good in late season. Nice 8 pt. has been showing up recently, but he doesn't spend much time there, I'd sure like to catch him traveling though past my stand.

Mauser, I hear you on acquiring more hunting land. I'm already on the lookout and have some leads.

mauser06 11-24-2008 02:36 PM

RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)

thanx guys...i hear you rybo, they can be as annoying as tree rats....but, of all the animals in the woods, i enjoy watching, seeing, listening to turkeys the most. they are amazing animals and i love how vocal they are. i have no problem doing what i did...and im sure theres going to be many more fall turkey deaths due to the ole 870 shooting them just that same way...still fun and rewarding...and i like to take a hen in the fall just to keep the population in check and keep my competition lowered in the spring:D one day, i'll try to take em with the bow in the spring...one day. i dont hunt fields and dont use decoys and never used a blind...not opposed to it...just havent and im a woods hunter...with my tactics and technics now, id be hard pressed to take one with a bow. i usually have a couple seconds to shoot or not...when i see them they are generally in range and close to being on my lap...just how i learned to hunt em...make em look for me and be within range to look for that hen...then i shoot or pass...

Germ, if i had the time, id be there....hectic year as far as school and training goes...and important for my career...im suffering that i gotta go sight the MAUSER in tomorrow or wed...i'll have fun rifle hunting the few days i get to rifle hunt....but love bowhunting.

Coug, as you know, ive found that to be my "limiting factor" this season more than ever. i knew last year when about 10 bucks were shot in the area of my honey hole hill, that id suffer this year. spotting, and what others tell me, i feel GOOD about seeing what i seen this season....i might not be a GREAT hunter...but i strive to get better and learn from every hunt. i feel that better properties is going to be critical now that i feel ive platued. the honey hole hill is really the only spot i have faith in. if i lived at home, id over hunt it and be up a creek after week 1 no doubt about it. the only reason it works is because i only get to hunt it a few times a season...just gotta be a shooter buck using that hill for me to have a shot at filling my tag there...

heading home for Thanksgiving break here after i gather my stuff up....rifle season opens Monday. i just dont have the spunk...i know im gunna have fun and maybe drop a buck through the rifle season..but i dont have that same spunk i had counting down for bow season....

RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)

Mauser, Im pretty sure you your 'hen' is a young of the year jake, justby looking at its feather coloring and head. Good job!!

Did i blow it this morning [:@] Last day of rilfe season and im hunting for the big 8 i have two sets of sheds from. Well he came in on my back side though a wide open field. I dont know why a buck or any other deer would come the way he did but it happened and i couldnt get a shot. I was skylined and he saw my movementfrom 120 yds. Going by his slight shrink in antler size I estimated him at 8yrs old. old bucks like that dont tolerate the slightlest movement. He was gone in a heartbeat. Ive never been more depressed hunting that at that moment.

I still have till jan 15th to get him with a bow but its gonna be tough.

drhntr, i dont think...its head was somewhat different...but im about positive it was a older hen...maybe this pic will show the size a bit better...(my gun is smaller than you may think...)

made it to my buddies camp FINALLY....hunted the rifle opener yesterday...

seen about 25 deer....3 buck for sure...2 different 4pts and a pile of doe and younguns..

the other buck i found bedded in brush...i was trying to still hunt and sneak around and find a better spot knowing 3-4 guys from camp couldnt sit still any longer...plus other hunters...i spotted that buck where i wanted to sit...75yds away or so...only thing i cant see clear is the head but i could see it had a decint rack...gotta have 3 on a side and i was pulling the trigger...could put nice antlers on it and g2s but too thick to see anything else...snuck to about 50 and got behind a big white pine..nothing really visible to him except my barrel...figured i would wait him out..once he stood id have a clear view and clear shooting any way he went...just his head was behind brush...he snaps his head and is looking past me...stands up and trots 10yds...then i see a bunch of other deer trotting around...ERRR no WAY he seen me! i look down and here comes a hunter...the deer bolt..hunter keeps walking..couple minutes later a shot rings out..then another hunter comes through lower...figured the first hunter got the buck...then my buddy gets on the radio and says he got an 8pt down....he was supposed to be across the road...he couldnt sit in the cold so he walked across to my side of the road and was walking around..spotted 5 doe...then the buck i seen and he shot it..then another smaller buck....glad he got it...nice 2.5yo 8pt..not real wide..maybe 12" but nice mass...probably 6" g2s...2-3" brows and 1" g3s....nice mountain buck...

buddies uncle dropped a brute of a mountain buck in the morning...he is the only one from camp that hunts across the road...probably 17-19 wide and HEAVY...good tine legnth all the way around...nothing HUGE but brows were proably 4" and everything else was 5-12" long...good mass...just an awesome buck....

i seen the most deer from the camp with 8 hunters...

funny my buddy killed that buck...he had class so he didnt come to camp till noon...ate lunch with me...left about 1-130...he killed that buck at like 230 lol....i need his luck!! i dont mind...now i got a good dog to push me one here at home....

the crew at home put out a bunch of bucks..the few big ones we had, they put out yesterday...couldnt believe they were pushing deer the first day when the few legal bucks around are all real nice...put out the 2 "monsters" that i havent seen yet..no shooting...then an 11, 8 and 4pt...my buddies daughter missed all 3 and the 11 got killed by someone else...

back to school today...home tomarrow afternoon and hunting thursday and saturday...

keep at it guys that are still bow hunting....only deer i may been able to kill with my bow yesterday was a 4pt that bedded 20yds under my tree for 2 and a half hours....he was the only one that wasnt on high alert....after he left my area, im sure he changed his mood...awesome to watch a deer THAT long....he just walked on in, walked in a circle like a dog and laid down...i LOVED having him there too...he was another set of eyes and i knew he would tell me when deer were within view...he sure did too!

Anyone still hunting with a bow here?

ANyone still deer hunting in general?

I took a doe this saturday with my handgun, 44 mag SBH. Saw 18 deer total, no bucks. My Dad took a doe & saw 30 deer and one small buck.

I've still got 4 more doe tags & my PA buck tag, I'll be out doing some more sporadic hunting well into january,

Nice Job Rybo!

I went out hunting with my wife over the weekend. We saw a few doe's and a couple small bucks, but nothing worth shooting. We'll be back at it again, until the end of the year. I have 4 days off during the Jan Doe season to fill the freezer.

mauser06 12-08-2008 08:29 AM

RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)

well, mauser is done.....atleast till late flintlock i'll take the flintlock doe hunting...

saturday i decided to ride upto my buddies camp again...not really much going on here at home...and saturdays we dont push our good woods because they get crowded...sitting in a ravine watching the other side and spotted a bunch of deer coming...atleast 5-8 deer...all slickheads except 1....i seen it was wide...put legal points on him (3 to a side up there) and put a bullet through his heart...he made it 15yds and piled up...i knew right away he looked like an older deer...got upto him and he had a horse of a body...

would been a nice 6...but he was busted up bad...15 1/4 wide...beams are both roughly 15"...g2 is about 6" other side brow is about 2" the other brow is snapped about smooth and the other g2 is about an inch and a half...(he had the good brow on the busted g2 side) i dont know how old he is, but everyone that seen him thinks he is an old deer on the decline...doesnt look like a 2.5yo buck...

no pics of me with the deer :( just some hanging before i skinned and quartered him...decided to come right home from camp due to winter weather moving in...made the right choice because i would been snowed in without 4wd...but on a saturday night, noone was around to take pics...battery in the camera was dead in the woods...likely from being in the cold so much and not being checked [:'(]

so mauser is outta the contest...sorry guys....when i seen him, i couldnt pass him...hes my "biggest" and definently oldest buck...i got finals this week and our late season usually doesnt produce much in terms of antlers...exspecially this year we wont have 2 from our already small late season crew...

skull is being boiled as i type...hopefully the teeth stay intact...id like to look at them good...from what i could see when i skinned the skull out, i think he was and old deer...would been a nice 6 if he werent busted up so bad....hide is huge...i think i'll send it to be tanned...any other hide i get that big will likely be one for the wall so i wont get the hide...

Congrats on the buck Mauser, way to go man. Post up some pics of that skull.

Here's my doe. You can't really tell from the pic, but she was HUGE. A group of 12, yes 12 slowly fed in on me and I picked out the closest big one. I could have shot her with my bow,she was 20 yds in a clear shooting lane.

oh well nothin i can do....wasnt long ago the only pics i DID take were hangin from the meat pole or on the tailgate...

congrats on the doe!! she looks like a cow! is that a ruger?? what caliber?? i just might have to venture into the realm of pistol hunting...but know nothing about hunting pistols really...i just know i need a change of pace...thats why i picked up the flintlock and the bow....next is pistol i think...

Mauser,

Handgun hunting is a blast. My gun is a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter with a weaver 2x scope. Single action 44 mag.
I load my own, I like the Hornady 240 gr XTP. I’ve also used the speer Gold Dot 270 gr. If I ever hunted bear or things larger than deer I would go with the GD’d, but for deer the XTP’s do a hurting on them just fine.

I’m not a fan of recoil so going any higher than a 44 wasn’t something I wanted to do. Although the 480 Ruger is supposed to have better performance but with the same recoil of a 44. As with most things out there, a ton of info is available on the internet, but there’s really not THAT much to know to get started. Keep it as basic as you can, a 44 mag is a perfect place to start. Take only good chest shots at the ranges you are accurate & you are good to go.

Hey guys, sorry its been so long. End of the semester crunch!!!

I will be out next week. I have to wait for this weekends antlerless only gun hunt to end then it is back to the woods for me.

Plenty of snow here should make finding where they go pretty easy.

Im still hunting. I shot my first deer with a blackpowder on sunday. A nice fat doe @ 15yds. She didnt go far w/ a gaping hole in her heart. Ill be back bowhunting this weekend again.

thanx Rob....till i obtain good land that isnt pressured like the lands i hunt now, i will forever continue to switch to the rifle and/or flintlock when the regular bow season ends...natural movement in daylight hours in my area is just about non-exsistant....for a couple years i tried stand hunting both rifle and flintlock seasons....if i seen deer, they were fully alert and were bumped or jumped by someone else...thats when i decided that i would not bowhunt outside the regular bowseasons...even those sightings were minimal next to opening day and saturdays when theres enough guys out to move deer...

thats the only reason i killed the buck i did...someone else bumped him and the does my direction...which is why i was sitting over a pretty nasty ravine...

i'll post pics when i find my camera cord...i didnt see it at home and its not here at school...i remember grabbing it before heading home...but i cant remember what i did with it...hopefully its at home somewhere...im real bummed about the lack of pics and NO good pics....i was doing well the last couple kills and got some decint pics...thats what happens when you leave batteries in the cold as long as i did...by the time i got home and got the camera a little charge, the deer was beyond stiff, gutted and bloody, and already hung to be butchered....ohhhh well live and learn....just like i learned not to use crappy film cameras...had one of them completely eat a rool of film from one of my spring turkeys...i was jacked....

i'll hafta measure him up just for kicks...broken tines kill it(probably 7" or so)...but id like to learn more on scoring so i can judge and learn more..im also hoping the teeth boiled out nicely so i can post pics of them...maybe someone will know how old he was...body and neck just tell me he isnt 2.5....could be wrong though...buddy knows i was REAL interested in the teeth and said he would try his best to keep the bottom jaws
