{EDIT} - EVERYONE IS NOW CHECKED IN!

Okay, let's get everyone checked in. From my experience last year being on the winning team, the important thing is getting your deer on the ground and reported. No one on our team shot a monster deer but we got 5 scores turned in and that was what won it.

I'll update this post and highlight everyone in green when they check in.

We'll also need to come up with a name. Some of the best names go first so if you have a good idea let's get it posted.

Good luck everyone!

Nathan

OK My turn to check in...have not been in this contest yet...my first year...I have taken 2 nice bucks in the past 3 years, hoping to be able to help the team...

RE: Team 16 Thread.

My turn I guess. First year in the contest. Looking forward to it here in the southern tier NY. I tend to be fairly lucky when it it comes to opportunities on 120+ buck, and probably just jinxed myself by saying that! Looking forward to sharing this season with my team. Terry Mclaughlin

P.S. I like the mix of " monster states " on our team!!

Little about myself. Retired NYS correction Officer-Attica and Elmira. Married. One daughter, one grandson. Live to hunt and fish-Deer, Trout, Salmon, Steelhead. Most of my hunting split between the Adirondacks and Chemung/Steuben/Schuyler Co.s.

My vote is for npaden leader of the team sweet 16, never miss.

Looking good so far! Again, I think the key is keeping everyone around and just getting the bucks that you shoot entered into the contest.

RE: Team 16 Thread.

I went ahead and sent the rest of the guys a PM letting them know they had been selected to our team and gave them a link to this thread so they could check in.

It is still 2 full months until deer hunting season for me, but I'm headed to Wyoming in less than 2 weeks to go elk hunting and I'm pumped about that!

RE: Team 16 Thread.

I guess I could officially introduce myself. I'm Nathan Paden and I live just outside of Lubbock, Texas. Last year I deer hunted in Montana and Texas and shot a 145" Mule Deer in Montana and a 100" Whitetail in Texas. I'm 40 years old and hunted growing up in Montana but just got back into it last year.

I've got a place in Fisher county that is only 160 acres but it seems to have good potential. I shot the 100"er last year by mistake as he came in right at the end of legal shooting light and I mistook him for an older buck. He was 2 1/2 based on looking at his jaw.

My hit list this year is as follows:

Double Wide:

Stickers: (He had a great sticker growing but it broke off!)

And last on the list - Split G2:

That's the bucks from this summer in the preference order on which one I would like to shoot first. Double wide won't score as high as stickers would, but he is a very old buck and is actually going downhill from last year.

Here's a picture of him before he dropped his antlers this winter:

I would be happy with any of those bucks though and I would have a hard time passing on any of them if I saw them on opening day.

I'm going down to the hunting property today and will hopefully get some updated pictures of them as they should be done growing and starting to shed velvet soon.

Hey npaden, since you already have taken command, a true leader you are, I vote you as team captain. Besides you were on the winning team last year.
Now a little about myself, 46 years old, married for 22, we have 2 daughters, ages 13 and 19, and when it comes to voting I'm always outnumbered 3-1. For some reason theywont count the dogs vote. My puppy is an 8 month old German Shorthair with a ton of energy that keeps me pretty busy...My hunting buddy and I are heading to our lease on Monday to check stands and do a little scouting. We hunt on 160 acres which about 60 are woods and the rest is now corn.I can't wait to get up there and see how it looks with the corn in. Last year it was all open fields.Thiswill be our 3rd year hunting this property and we have seen some really nice deer.

Forgot to ask in my previous post. As team members, do we get invites to hunt each others land? jk

Sorry guy's for the late responce but I'm here and ready to take'm down. Bow season opens for me next Monday 9/8/08 but I get two bucks for the season. Looking forward to the season. This is also my first time to be in a contest.I've had good luck in the past, and have had my stands up for several months, as well as food plots and mineral licks are in place.

I'm 46 married with 3 kids, 22, 21,and 17. Love the family and love to hunt. I'm a self employed construction worker.I'm from Central North Carolina and have about 400 acers of private land to hunt. Some ofthe newest borders an abandoned apple orchard. Other areas include open hay fields which have clover, and of course lots of hard woods.

As far as team names... We Got Horns,,, Down Range Widow Makers,,,Wall Hangers Delux,,, or even Pump Busters.

I am here. Unfortunately, I did not draw a resident special property permit in the Illinois lottery this year. I signed up prior to lottery results being posted. As a result, my odds of taking a buck with a gun are not good this year. I will be concentrating on bowhunting a newly opened public land here in Illinois. The gun seasons are short here. I will pull a county permit to gun hunt in the Shawnee Forest, if I have not already spent my 2 buck tags during the archery season. We'll just have to see. I strictly trophy hunt. Won't shoot at anything below 140" regardless of weapon.

I have taken him off of your team, I will replace him as soon as another one signs up.
I am sorry for the mix up.
Thank You,

Today was the archery opener for Celeveland Co. NC, and man did it get started off right for me. I know that this didn't help the team but I couldn't pass him up. He was a small 8pt.basket rack probely 2.5 years old but still in full velvet. He'll make a nice skull mount. This was my first nice boned buck with a bow.
I think Widow Makers will do just fine.
And a big Howdy to UFunny2.

Okay, just checking in really quick while I'm out of town at a conference. I added UFunny2 to the list and that leaves us with 2 left to check in. I sent the PM's with receipt confirmation and the remaining two have not read their PMs yet.

I somehow messed up and didn't turn my camera on last time before I left so no new pictures to share.

Nathan. did you want to be our team captian? and what do you think about WIDOW MAKERS as our team name?

olsplittoe 09-09-2008 04:39 PM

RE: Team 16 Thread.

Yes I know I committed a crime, but.... Any excuse isn't good enough I know. Thanks to lightning we lost phones, modums, computer, moniters, and thefour in onecopy, print, scaner, and fax. Should have that one next week. Then you will get the pic,s. I'm just glad the house didn't burn down, been thru that before.
The buck was a 2.5 year old according to the teeth. The rack as I said earlier was a small basket, I'd be suprised if it scored much over a hundred inchs if that, but he was still in full velvet. This was again the first buck with a bow other than a spike last year, so to me it wasagreathunt.
This hunt also took place in a new spot on new property, so if I can just wait till the rut starts, but you know that if Mr.Big steps out the shaft will be loosed. But now I've drawn first blood I can start to load up on the doe's. We have an open season for doe's in the county I live in, and season opens this Saturday. I've had great luck over the past few years and have taken at least five deer per season.I see no reason this year wont be at least as good.

Congrats...and thanks! Always nice to start a season off successfully. I still have to wait another 3 weeks from Saturday for our bow opener. I have access to about 2100 acres of beautiful property. 1500 of it is managed for quality. We have about 50 acres of food plots that have been loaded with deer. Visited there this weekend and counted about 80 deer. Some had decent racks, but my binocs couldn't get me close enough for a count, but they were way above the ears. Last year I passed on 5 different 8 ptrs, I know there are larger deer on the property. Our rule is 8 pts or better. I did go buckless there last year, but harvested 6 doe. The state allows us to take 50 antlerless off the property for management purposes. We've done that for four years now, but the place is still loaded with does. It's not club property and only 5 of us hunt it.

The other 600 acres is a newly purchased parcel. I scouted it it two weeks ago and saw many does and a few bucks. A tall 6pt, a couple 4s and several spikes. I couldn't find a single rub from last season. Thought that was odd, but the deer are there. It's the same landowner as the above property, but he has other plans for this parcel and there probably won't be any AR's on it.

Anyway, those are my two major areas to hunt. I plan on taking a week off for bow season and two weeks off in Nov for ML season, then the week after Christmas.

Yes, welcome to the team UFunny2.

Widow Makers sounds fine to me. I'm an accountant so not a lot of creativity here. Do we need to wait for the last 2 guys before we decide on the name?

I went back through my pictures and did have a new buck in there but just one group of pictures.

He's the one in the middle. The one on the right is Split G2 and I've already had pictures of him. I would love to be able to pass on both of these guys this year. That would mean that I would have already shot Double Wide or Stickers because otherwise I don't think I could hold off if I saw either one. Not sure because it is hard to age them at this time of the year, but I think they are both 3 year olds.
