What's it all about?

I know the contest probably means different things to different people........but....at the end of the day....it IS about putting a buck on the ground and scoring points for your team.

There are some choices, below.....just to feel the pulse of the forum. No wrong answer.

RE: What's it all about?

There were 2 anwers that fit me....1&6.

I am looking forward to my first season in the contest to have fun with the teamates and such. Also, I will be serious about scoring a good buck, but I do hunt with other weapons at times.

RE: What's it all about?

I hit #4 but 1, 3, and 4 all fit.

mobow 07-16-2007 10:31 AM

RE: What's it all about?

I think what the contest is REALLY about is comeraderie, and friendships. Not just with your own team, but between teams as well. That's the part I look forward to the most, getting to know some other people I may not know now, and sitting down, relaxing and having a good time shooting the breeze with the team, and other teams.

Yes, the OBJECTIVE is to get a buck on the ground and score points, but I personally don't feel that's really what this contest is about.

RE: What's it all about?

Well then, mobo.....would you sign up for the contest, then, if you normally didn't expect to ki.......

Sorry.

Nevermind.

(You know I'm kidding. This one should have went in the smack talk thread:D)

RE: What's it all about?

I guess I'm the first one to click, "it's all about putting a buck on the ground"...actually I might answered that incorrectly because that's going to be my goal regardless of the contest so for the contest, number 1 might be fitting however, I'm in it for the tag!

RE: What's it all about?

For me it about meeting and learning from other people. I just need something to do while at work(on break of course)and I am thinking about hunting. I don't have any friends that hunt and my family doesn't bow hunt a lot any more. It's just nice hear and see some of the stories and share some of my own.

I'm all about putting deer on the ground. I'd rather kill my buck with archery only tackle but I use whatever it takes.

Ina recent discussion withscott...(buckeye)....It got me thinking.....this IS a bowhunting contest...and the objective is for everyone to put inches of antler on the ground for their team.

I just think that fact shouldn't be diminished.

Whats the contest about...whats the rules...and I need everything about it!

Rob/PA Bowyer 07-16-2007 11:12 AM

RE: What's it all about?

One point that is in that poll is like last year. When it was closing down and even one buck could have made a difference, many laid down their bows and picked up the guns when bows would have been a legal means to take a deer in said gun season.

Is that because it's more important to actually take a deer rather than possibly assisting in team spirit and scoring? It's my thought than when one enters a contest even as simple as this one, even tho the fun spirit is there, I would still want to put my all into it, like everything I do in life, I do it 100% or I don't do it.

Course I'm 3 for 3 in these things. [8D] :D

Rob:

You're saying (more directly) what I was end-arounding to. I think for the guys signing up for the first time.....it's important to have a sense of commitment to the cause.

Yes....it's for fun.....but we're also keeping score.;)

RE: What's it all about?

I put #3 just because that is wht fit the "best". I also like joking back and forth between teamates and between teams. That is the fun side of it. The serious side is putting as many inches on the scoreboard as you can. I will not shoot just any buck tho. Holding out for a nice one this year.

And I will only be using ARCHERY GEAR!

At this point I am exact same. I love chatting with my teammates, but I am after mature buck with ARCHERY GEAR!!!

Agreed, I won't argue that in the least. Putting a buck on the ground w/ archery tackle is the objective, but not the point. Is it realistic to think all 400 guys are gonna put one on the ground? No, of course not. Does that mean they didn't give it their all? Again, of course not. So what are we gonna do then, limit it to the guys that are only 100% sure they ARE gonna put one on the ground? Absolutely not......So the POINT is the fun, friendships and comeraderie.

Please understand, I'm not upset at all, though as I read that post it kind of sounds like I am. But I'm not, not even close. I just feel strongly about it, and in fact if killing a buck truely is the point of this whole contest.....Rob, please remove my name from the signup....I don't want to have part in something that is soley about shooting a buck and nothing else. Though I'm sure this isn't....

Again, I'm not upset, that's just how I see it. I just didn't realize that it was taken THIS seriously.......Anyway..............

Jeff,
While I am all for assisting my team in repeating, I am not going to change my goals and long term management plans for my farms in order to win the contest. I will do everything I can, as I do whether or not I am in a contest, to shoot a nice buck, but I am not going to shoot a 1.5 year old buck just for a 100" score.Sorry guys but that is just me.

GMMAT 07-16-2007 11:42 AM

RE: What's it all about?

mobo....I don't read your replies as you being upset.

Last year was my first year in the contest. We had some teams that had guys that never participated. They didn't post on the team thread......didn't check in....didn't do anything.

I'm not trying to EXclude anyone.....just kindly asking (for the sake of the contest) that if you're going to sign up.....think about the other 9 guys on your team. I'm betting most of them are serious about their archery hunting.

Here's an example....

If I knew I was only going to hunt 4-5 times during archery season.....and then pick up the ML.......then pick up the rifle..... I wouldn't enter the contest. But that's just me.

If I knew I was only going to get to hunt <10 times....but I was going to do all my hunting via archery tackle....I probably would still enter.

RE: What's it all about?

I plan on using my bow 75% of the time this year. I am not however going to use my bow if it means not having a chance at a deer. I'll give it my all during archery season but when muzzleloader and rifle rolls around, I'm doing what it takes to take a deer. I plan on using my bow during rifle and muzzleloader some but in the end its all about doing what it takes to take a deer. I haven't been put in a situation to where the team winning is on the line, but in that situation I could see me taking the bow out to try to get the team a win.

mobow 07-16-2007 11:47 AM

RE: What's it all about?

Jeff, I agree with that 100%! It's pretty darn aggravating to have everyone from your team check in, then disappear never to be heard from again.

With the 600 grain logs you use as “arrows” I think it is more like a trebuchet than archery gear:D

This is my first time entering the contest.......yet, I voted for #6. Does that make me less comitted? I would hope no one would believe that. I spend 3 months deer hunting nearly every day. About half the time will be with the bow and the other half will be with a ML or rifle. I hunt so much and love to hunt with any weapon that I have no desire to hunt exclusively with a bow.

RE: What's it all about?

One other thing. It seems that people get upset when some people enter and don't participate.....rightfully so. But most on here get a little to anxious to get the sign-up going and it starts way to early. Between now and September 1 there are going to be a lot of people who come and go and are not serious about this site or the contest.

IMHO, the sign-up should have been put off until closer to season and should only be 2 weeks long.

A little patience goes a long way.

Heck no, buddy. I think the scenario I depicted was the one that would concern fellowteammates.

Hell....I hope you're on my team!

RE: What's it all about?

Dan:

Rob gives everybody plenty of time after sign-ups.....for team captains to be chosen....and for them to make sure everybody on their team is accounted for and is participating. if they have no shows......they get replaced with alternates.

It works out just fine.

Matt/TN 07-16-2007 01:47 PM

RE: What's it all about?

I LOVE to archery hunt, but I also LOVE to use the Smokepole. I pretty much limit myself to those 2, but I take the .270 on youth hunts.

_Dan 07-16-2007 01:48 PM

RE: What's it all about?

I realize that. But sometimes I believe people get too impatient.

Believe me, I'm not trying to say how to run the contest. From what I have heard, Rob does a GREAT job of it and I'm excited for my first year entering.

Once teams are picked.....there's a little smack talked (friendly)....then....something comes over the forum. EVERYBODY roots for EVERYBODY as the bucks start falling. The congratulating of each other is pretty cool. I'm looking forward to seeing the "score"photos!;)

Though I didn't enter last year, I get a kick out of some of them too. Pretty amusing.

Edited: Though I must say.....some of the small bucks score higher than they look. It doesn't take much bone to make 100".....

RE: What's it all about?

It's all about having fun with everyone , not just team mates but other teams as well .
Like mobowhunter said , as we talk with each other and throw some smack among our sleves we build friendships along the way.
Regaurdless of we make a kill and score one for the team at the end , when everything said and done we all come out winning something from it.

LOL I figured someone would take it the wrong way. I realize big racks aren't everywhere. I meant that when measuring a rack 100" adds up quick. Actually, so does 120" ;)

Hell I have see a spikes that scored nearly 40'':D

Think about what a 40'' spike would look llike

LG1 RG1
12'' 12''
LHT RHT
4.5 5.5
Inside Spread
7''
