RE: Official Team #11 Thread
Antlergetter checking in!! I'll be hunting WV and Va this year and I have several hundred acres to cover! I'll be putting my Remington 700 .270 ADL to the test for the first time this year. I have several stands already that I'll bow hunt the early bow season, then I'll modify them so I can see father to hunt the gun season. Hopefully I'll be able to help the team.

RE: Official Team #11 Thread
I'll only be muzzleloader & shotgun hunting after bow. No rifle here...
Antlergetter... did you ever shoot one of those bears you were asking about the sizes? I shot a little one.... |
RE: Official Team #11 Thread
Western MA Hunter... I havent been out for one yet but they are certainly still in the area! The sign is everywhere and they keep ripping down my cameras. Bear Bow Season opens oct. 8 here in VA.

RE: Official Team #11 Thread

|
RE: Official Team #11 Thread
checking in. I'll be looking for mr big, but there are not very many large bucks up here where I am. be taking the trusty 243 out.
|
RE: Official Team #11 Thread
Hoyt3... we are on all the same teams!
Big bucks out here are few & far between out here as well. We can only hunt shotgun out here in MA, but it'll do. Last year the only buck I took was a 4 pointer. I did take a nice 8 the year before w/ the muzzleloader. If we get a buck period, we are doing something right here! At least we got 3 checked in! |
RE: Official Team #11 Thread

Let's all congratulate Hoyt3 for his doe last night w/ the bow!
Good job!!! |
RE: Official Team #11 Thread
Everybody must be busy bowhunting...! Hoyt3, you've been slaying them... 4 does now? That is awesome.
I passed on a doe w/ 2 yearlings this morning. Don't know how I feel about it yet. Time will tell. I don't see alot of deer in MA during bow. I may regret that! |
RE: Official Team #11 Thread

|
RE: Official Team #11 Thread
Muzzleloader opening up sat.. Ive seen a few deer here and there during bow season but I just havent connected. I'll still be hunting my bow stand in one of the 4 bow only counties in WV, but I'll switch to firearm here in Va. I sure am craving some venison, hopefully Sat will be the day!! Good luck all.

RE: Official Team #11 Thread
w. ma hunter-yeah, been doing alot of bowhunting. giving this week off as I really muffed the opener of muzzleloader. I shot four does and missed as many. the only year I don't have a rangefinder...lost it last year, and man could I have used it this year. missed a doe last friday at 30 yds (my fault, range error) and then AGAIN at 40. that time wasn't my fault though, I knicked a branch. the arrow was true for 35 yds. I am hoping that the area I am hunting holds true to seasons past. aka, alot of out of area bucks come in to breed the does. seen a few nice ones in the two other seasons I've been here.

RE: Official Team #11 Thread
O.k., according to the rules I can enter my second deer kill if I'm readin that right. I bagged a 6 point but after lookin at some of the other guys photos in the submission thread, I think I'll wait and see if I get one alittle bigger :D. Dont get my wrong, this is my first deer in 3 years, and my first ever since I moved to VA. Not only that but I came from a bow only county so its my first with a rifle so I'm tickled plumb pink. AND my family will really enjoy the meat. However, I know there are bigger in the area, so with 2 more buck tags I think I'll hold out and see what happens.

RE: Official Team #11 Thread
A trophy is in the eye of the beholder. Heres my trophy ;). This was my first kill since my son was born and he had a blast with the deer!! I might just make a hunter out of him one day!!

RE: Official Team #11 Thread
well boys and girls, I got out for the opener in va only to get skunked. couldn't believe it. went out yesterday morning and shot a big doe. driving out, my buddy and I see a buck chasing a doe. no fulfillment from getting out and shooting like that, so we waited. this deer is the best I've seen in my area. somewhere right about 16" and 8 points. dark rack and heavier than usual antlers. I jumped him and his lady friend going in to the stand yesterday eve, but couldn't get a shot. passed a five pointer. this am, I sat a really thick spot and shot a doe at a whopping 18 yds with my 30-06. she didn't go far. she picked me off bad because I was yacking on my radio. pick me off will ya?? she is a doe that I shot at 2 seasons ago and the bullet deflected and killed another deer, but not before taking the end of her tail off. that is how I know it was the same doe. she is about four and a half years old. I'll just upload one pic for now.

Antlergetter,
That is an awesome buck. Definately a trophy. Nothing to be ashamed of there. Congrats. Grabbing the gun for the first time this season tommorrow and heading to NY w/ the 30.06. MA shotgun starts monday. We'll see what that brings. Nice doe Hoyt3. She'll be good eatin'. Good story about you past experience w/ her. Hope you get the big boy... Don't know about passing on that 5 pointer though! He'd be in the freezer now. |
RE: Official Team #11 Thread
Hey guys. Sorry I never checked in. I'm new to this. I just got back from my Minnesota hunt. I shot a 4 point 137 lb. Everyone in my party (4) shot a buck. Two forks, a six and a monster 10 point. We didn't get the final weight on the 10 because the coyotes got to it before we did. It weighed 176 without the hind quarters. Good luck everyone I'll check in later.

RE: Official Team #11 Thread
Saturday morning started as a snowy day again here in the U.P, and it was the 2nd day of the muzzle loader season, i went out for the morning hunt and hunted till around noon and only seen a few doe, but i was really anxious to hunt this stand again later...as its normally a better evening stand.
So i went home grabbed some lunch and headed back out for the evening hunt, i got to my blind and within minutes i had a doe come out into the apple orchard i was watching, with the temps in the low teens i knew the deer would be on the move looking to feed...a few minutes later a doe and 3 fawns come out, an hour goes by and now and shooting light is fading fast...i catch movement to my right put the bino's up and 3 more does come out, as i was watching them dig thru the snow for apples i see them all start looking behind me, just starring back over my right shoulder, i new then something had to be comming, then i hear these foot steps comming closer and closer and all of a sudden he steps out 20 yards in front of my pop up blind and stares in the window at me. I played the stare game with him for what seemed like for ever, he then starts walking out in the clearing towards the does, chases them away with his head down turns broadside at about 50yrds i raised my smokepole and took aim and shot. after all the smoke cleared i seen him running real low to the ground which indicated a good shot. He went about a 100yrds and he piled up, he's not the biggest buck but im happy with him. ![]() |
RE: Official Team #11 Thread
That's a nice one. Congrats.
I have shot 2 does w/ the gun so far. Nothing with horns has shown itself yet... |
RE: Official Team #11 Thread
Went out this past Saturday and did some drives with the muzzleloader. First drive my brother in law took a nice 5 pointer. Next drive my buddy hit a big 8. It ran by me and I missed. We found the deer the next day (half of it anyway). It was a nice 8 w/ an 18" inside spread. It was my buddy's first buck.. Kindof glad I didn't hit it! :) He actually hit it in the leg and the coyotes must have finished him off. Poor thing. I'll post some pics when they are developed. I have never seen him smile so much!

RE: Official Team #11 Thread
Happy Holidays everyone! I hope you all have a safe and fun weekend!

RE: Official Team #11 Thread
well, I had a good xmas. hope everyone enjoyed their holiday. My wife got me the parka I wanted and now I can just wear three layers instead of six. she got me a pair of bibs too back in Nov for my bday. every time she gets me something and I wear it, I kill a deer. got a gorilla king kong stand from my folks which is awesome and a fleece hood cover.
I've been out here and there and decided to go out to a patch of cover that the deer have used in years passed. some young hunter really screwed the pooch for me this year and the late season isn't nearly as productive in there as it usually is. I sat a spot on the ground after seeing there was 0 fresh sign at my one stand. I figured why not and took the 243. It was windy as heck. 35mph gusts. I didn't see anything until I got up and knelt on the edge of a field to watch for the final five mins or so. I look out and I think, 'man, that looks like a deer'. well, it wasn't, but 4 deer. three little ones and mom on a trail that I didn't even know was there. hey, I've only hunted this place for three seasons! anyway, I couldn't get a shot from there, and light was going fast. I went back into the woods and came out a bit farther up. I put the gun on a pine limb and just as the crosshairs settled, I get a cramp in my leg. ouch. worked that out and resettled. I was debating on whether or not to shoot because she was just on the other side of a fence, when the gun went off. guess I decided to shoot. I found zero sign. I looked in the fading light for about five mins before finding her. a nice big fat 4.5 y.o. doe. I'll have to watch this trail in the future. I'll post a pic when I get home. this is number 11 for me. two weeks left. I am hoping to find that elusive buck. I've seen but six this year. |
RE: Official Team #11 Thread
8 days left and 3 more tags!! I havent gotten out any during late muzzleloader because I was sick. I spent my holiday time on the throne with a stomache bug [&o]! However I did get a trailcam photo of a decent8-point buck behind my house a couple weeks ago. 2 days before Christmas my buddy hunted theground blindI was going to(if I werent sick) and saw the same bucktrailing a doe. That is the latest in the year I've ever heard of a buck trying to chase a doe around here. Since he was out of buck tags he let the buck walk right past him. I think I'll spend alittle time in that blind.

RE: Official Team #11 Thread
Going out this afternoon and tomorrow for the last 2 days of muzzleloader season. Haven't been seeing very much sign at all. Most of the deer are yarded up already and I have not been able to stumble across them yet.

RE: Official Team #11 Thread
