I live down by mankato, but do most of my hunting in the extreme SE corner. Houston county, between Houston and la Crescent. It sure would be nice if we could tag two bucks like some other states

Well we finally got some rain so I am off today and Sat so I wont only get to hunt on Sunday. We had a cold front come through and it is about 20 degrees cooler now.Plus it is drizzling constantly now.It is suppose to drop into the 30's at night with a high around 50 sunday.I expect to see a ton of movement from does and bucks also.Wife already knows I will be on a hunting nige this weekend.because the next 2 weekends I will be out of town.
This is one of those perfect (pre) pre rut where they are starting to look at the does but arent really chasing yet.The weather is changed about 30 degrees and they will be moving most of the fields have been picked so it is all wide open.Going to spend tonight and tomorrow morning hunting field edges to see where and if any big ones are coming out so i can hunt it Sat evening and Sunday all day.I know I can go to the oak flats and see something but this is the last chance to see a big one I have missed with all the fields picked now. Hope you all have a great hunting weekend and if I am real lucky and a good buck walks by we will add some more points to our score. Good Luck to you all and safe hunting.............. Albert |
RE: Official Team Bag Em & Drag Em (29) Thread
Well I got my doe yesterday, good sized one about 100lbs dressed, 3 1/2 year old, Not to happy about the shot though, Missed judged the distance. I will tell the story, Now keep in mind I an a very good shot, I can shoot consistant 2 inch groups at 50 yrds. well here goes the story.
I was sitting in my stand facing some open hard woods with some tanglebrush behind me, with my buddy in the other stand about 50 yrds to my left, I here some crashing to my right and two doe come running into the woods, one runs right under my stand and heads over to my buddys stand and I see her slow down to a walk,, headding stright to him,, a few seconds later I see the other doe walk into the clearing to my right and walk around the tanglebrush, and then prosced to walk into it and bed down 8yrds behind me, and decided to take a nap,, for 30 minuts she layed there and she would sneeze every once in a while, so after 30 minuts of this I wanted her to get up, I here my buddy shoot and hear the deer crash through the woods, Now I am getting worried that he will get down and walk to me, so I don't want him to spook the deer laying behind me, so I start tossing things out of my stand to get her to get up so I can get a shot at her, My hat, gloves, backpack, nothing doing she would not move, finnialy she gets up and starts walking into my shooting lane, at 12yrds I shot and the arrow flys right over the top of her, my pins are 20,30, and 40 yrds, I should have aimed way low at that close distance, (mental mistake) so she runs up on the ridge about 40yrds now, so I put my 40yrd pin right on the top of her back and let it go, and down in a heap she drops, Good shot I think to myself, well aftermy buddy hears this he finnialy walks over to me and we go look at her, he asked me how for I think she was away from me ,I say 40 42 yrds, he then tells my that after he walks the distance that the shot was at least 60 65 yrds, Now I am not telling this to show anyone how great of a shot I am I am telling this so maybe some can learn from my mistake,,I thought the shot was 40 yrds and found out I was wrong it was alot farther, 65 yrds, now alot can happen in the time you release the arrow and it hits the target, I felt really bad for making that shot after finding out what had happend, I have a fast bow shooting around 290fps,after I let the arrow go the deer heard the bow and steped backward and looked in the direction of the arrow, and the arrow would have hit her in the lungs, had she not moved and dipped her head, insted the arrow hit her in the bridge of her nose and went threw and penetrated her brain, she died instantley, but I will tell you now I will never take a shot over 30 yrds again. I hope this does not offened anyone, I have included a picture so you all can see what happended, and maybe it will make you think about taking long distance shoots, And in no way am tring to be rude or anti over 30 yrds shots, I just wanted to share this with you all..as a learning experince.. Please feel free to give me feedback on this, weather good or bad. |

Wow
I have made the same mistakes before and shot under my deer. One inparticular was a wall mounter that I missed 3 years ago.I made sure this wouldnt happen again I ordered a bow only range finder. You turn a dial until the 2 pictures merge into 1.Has a dial on the side to tell the distance.I think I only paid 50 or 60 for these online.Cheaper way of making sure you know the distances from your stand.Has proved itself several times and has helped me to know the ranges before I check it more and more.Well atleast it turned out good. That is a good thing. You dont have a wounded animal running around in your woods. |
RE: Official Team Bag Em & Drag Em (29) Thread
Well I have never seen a bow shot like that, lol! Yardages can be very deceiving in the woods especially if you are estimating when looking up or down a hill. Whenever I set up a stand (no climbers) I tie little bits of floursescent flagging and mark 25 yards N, S, E, W around my stand. I dont shoot over thirty yards ever anyway so that heps me.
Had you not got her brain, I'm guessing she would have bled like a stuck pig. Not knowing where you hit her you would have a good blood trail that would have gone on forever and woulda left you scratching your head.Kind of a cool photo, good deer no matter what the shot, good work. |

Son of a ... that's gonna leave a mark!!!! That broadhead may have been a little difficult to pull out. I agree about shooting 30 yds. That is my limit. I feel really comfortable at 20 yds and can shoot pretty tight groups out to 30. Always better to pass the shot than wound an animal. By the way congrats on the doe.

thanks for the understanding, as for the broadhead, 100gr Muzzy three blade, when wetried to pull it out the insert pulled from the shaft, leaving the Muzzy in her head, my butcher cut it out for me, I will never shoot another type of broadhead, there was nothing wrong with it, no chips, nothing, and still as razor sharp as when i bought em, Now thats a broadhead!!!!!! Good luck to everyone..

Arrrrrghhhhhhhh!! I got here too late!!!! I was thinking about that one on stand this morning and was going to suggest to you not to pull that arrow out. The skull with the arrow in it would have made one of the coolest European mounts ever.
Oh well, gotta shoot one that way again I guess.........well maybe not ;) |
RE: Official Team Bag Em & Drag Em (29) Thread
WellI thought tonight was the night! I went to a new part of the farm I hunt, just for change and set up on the ground. Made a little ground blind about 2 hours before dark and waited. About 20 minutes before darkI hear very soft and quiet footsteps coming towards me on a trail. I am watching intently as it is very thick and I am on the ground so visibility is limited. Then I see these big tines turn to go under a low hanging limb. Heart starts pumping and I attach my release, I cant see him very good until he is in my shooting lane but I know he is a defnite shooter. He is scheduled to pass me at 12 yards. He gets behind a tangle of branches right before he steps into my lane, I draw, anchor and wait for him to step out. He steps out and turns and looks right at me. His left side has 5 points, heavy, tall, just awesome!! Then I see his right side for the first time. It is this massively thick prong that goes up about 6 inches and forks, looked exactly like a pronghorn! I think I actually said out loud, "oh sh!t" This would be easily a 150 calss ten pointer had his right side matched his left but nope, nothing but a stubby prong. I let up on my release and just watched him. He eventually got to three paces, I could her him chewing!!!!!! He was incredible being so close to a mature buck and he never knew I was there! Awesome.
Last night I has about a 110 class eight pointer work a scrape 15 yards in front of my stand. He stretched, he pawed, he peed, he worked the overhanging branch. Just awesome to watch. Sometimes I think it would be just as fun hunting with a camera as a bow. I tried grunts and bleats on both bucks after they moved a ways away from me and they had zero interest. The ruts not here but it is coming... |
