Look for the bucks to be there in about 2 weeks. With that many does, they will come. Good Luck.
I have only seen a spike and a 4 point here in PA along with several does. I choose not to harvest any does until mid November. I know the bucks arearound its just being in the right place at the right time. My father and I are heading back out to Ohio on the 27th. We are really looking forward to that. That 200+ that was taken in Ohio is only about 60 miles away. I think we are in the right area. Hopefully we can find his long distance cousin.;) |

Good luck guys,
I had to go to southern Illinois this weekend to check on my father-in-laws and my tree stands (private land) for the up comming gun season.I was planning on going down alone and hunting with my bow in the afternoonbut at the last second my fater-in-law decided he wanted to go with me. He dosen't bow hunt so I was screwed. But I did get out this week around where I live and I too am seeing only does. I had a couple of shots but I think I will hold off for a while. I at least want to keep things cool until the rut. I don't want to disturb the doe patterns because I know the bucks are going to start chasing. I have been seeing more and more rubs lately (good sign) So I will keep my cool for now. I will probably get out thursday and again on the weekend. I am still very optimistic because where I am hunting there is no other hunting pressure. The private land is surrounded by forest preserve land where hunting is not allowed. So unless the deer are poached or hit by a car they will be there. It's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. |

So close! So close! I decided to do a little stalk tonight. Misting Rain and the wind was in my face until I crested the hill. Then the wind hit me in the back of the neck and up stands an 8 point at 30 yards. I tried to move to an opening and that's when I noticed 2 more with it. Another 8 and a 6 point and the one was looking right at me. I tried waiting them out but I never could get a clear sight picture so I chose not to shoot. I was at full draw twice. Just couldn't make it happen. They were about 100 yards from my stand. If I could just get them to come over the top.:(Oh well,at least I know there still around. The one will probably score about 115 but in PA I would be happy with that.

Sounds like they are still in their bachelor groups.....look for that to end pretty soon. Good luck next time. I went out tonight and saw does only. I had a shot but decided against it. Still early in the season and I'm waiting for the rut to kick in.
I am going out this weekend as well. |

Hi all glad to see everyone is having a good time this season. Been away sometime. The computer was on the blink. Sorry to say my season started off bad, REAL BAD!!!!!!! The first day I was hunting a spot along the PA Turnpike. This spot you can set your watch too with the deer. Between 8am and 8:30 the deer almost always come through. At 8:10 I see 3 bucks on the other side of the creek, a 6pt, 7pt and a real nice 4pt. If I seen the 4pt from afar I would have swore he was a nice 6 or 8pt. The 6pt walks over near my stand but it too small to shoot. After that the 3 bucks walk 60 yards behind me and bed down. At 8:45 6 does come walking my way, one of them is walking right by me at 15yards quarter away so I take the shot. Well to say I made a bad shoot, thats a understatement[:o]I hit her right where the neck and shoulder meet. The arrow stays in her and I can see about 4" of it sticking out of her. She ran real fast and almost fell down, that I thought was a good sign. She ran right past the 3 bedded buck too, they just looked at her and stayed in their beds. At 9:15 I had a 7pt walk right under my stand. I no the shoot on the doe is not that good so I wait 4hours to go track her, that was a mistake. At 1pm I get out of my stand and look at were I shot her no blood. She ran real fast so I went to the last spot that I seen her and found blood lots of blood, as you have with a neck shot at first. I start to follow the blood into this thicket and about 50yards in I jump her and she walks away. At this point Im Sick[:o]So the chase is on now that I think its a muscle. The ony chance you have with a muscle shot is too keep pushing the deer. I tracked this deer for 3more hours and jumped her 2more times before I lost the bloodtrail. The last spot of blood I found was black clot. I lost her[:@]. Its was hot here in PA on the first day, but I went back Sunday anyway to find her out of respect to the DEER and the DEER GODS. No luck[&o]The only thing I can say is I made a bad sot and I feel real bad for the deer I made suffer, but thats part of the game we call Bowhunting. I been out a few more times and seen some small bucks and does but no shooter bucks. I feel a sick day coming on Monday, it's been raining all week here in PA. Goodluck Guys and shoot straighter than me. I will check in after the next hunt GOODLUCK BE SAFE

Hunted Thursday evening.....saw 4 does.....3 at 75 yards.....but the one big doe fed on acorns for about an hour at 20 to 25 yards. She was working an area in fairly thick brush and behind some trees. There were 2 squirrels working up in the tree tops knocking down acorns and that deer stayed in roughly the same spot for an hour........4 or 5 times she only needed to take two more steps and I'd have a shot. I never got the chance.....maybe next time!
Starting to see some scrapes.....not much for rubs yet. Good Luck this weekend and I hope everyone checks in with a report! |

Hunted sat morn......hope this isn't the new trend.....but I didn't even see a deer! Bummer....so far this season I'd had shot opportunities every time out!

Well I'm still seeing does on a regular basis. I saw a few last weekend and had shot opportunities. Still holding off though. We go to mid January here in Illinois so I still have time. Plus the rut has yet to start (getting close)
I was pretty busy with work plus my little girl has the flu so I have not hunted this week but I will get out this weekend for sure. I am pretty happy with my stand location. It's right up against a creek and no matter where the wind is blowing I have yet to be detected. My other stands are down in southern Illinois and I will be taking some time to hunt them before and after the gun season. So those have yet to be hunted. I am really set on this spot near my home because there are at least two nice 120-130 class bucks and one very big one (don't want to guess but over 150) plus a few smaller deer. I know some are (and that's ok) but I'm not big into QDM. Yes I would like a P&Y buck and have taken my share but I have also shot smaller younger bucks as well. It all depends on whats going on and what I have been seeing. In Illinois you are allowed two bucks so If I am seeing big deer (like at the one spot) I will probably pass on the smaller ones (I hope you guys don't mind) because I like to save a buck tag for gun season. If I don't kill a buck during the gun season then I havetwo for the archery season and may choose a smaller buck if the moment is right. It's hard to explain but I make up my mind to shoot at the last monent. If it feels right I will try for the kill, if it doesn't I won't. I have passed on bucks that were right in front of me and I was at full draw......but have no doubt if "Mr. Big" shows up, arrows will be flying! Good luck all! |
