I always carry my S&W 629 in a chest holster but for serious protection its reallyhard to beat a cross slung guide gun in 45/70. 405gr Kodiak JSP @ 1925fps packs a lot of punch and penetration far superior to most shotgun slugs. The dixie terminator slugs and brenneke big game slugs are supposed to be pretty good though.
I use my guide for for hunting a lot too, and is a great companion in the boat or across the handle bars of the 4 wheeler.
That being said
I would gladly take a handful of common sense and precaution over any ammount of firepower.
