Typical shot shells develop all their top pressure and velocities before 16.5 to 18 inches. An extra couple of inches can be allotted for especially heavy loads. Thus all the 20-inch slug and turkey barrels. The extra length in 24 to 30 inch barrels is for sighting, balance, and smooth follow through when wing shooting.
